When is the base runner legally allowed to advance after a caught fly ball? I looked in the rule book and it says when the ball is "caught". Well, what happens if it bounces out of the players glove and he bobbles it for a second then catches it. Does the runner have to wait until it's ruled a catch? What would happen if you intentionally bobbled it to help yourself make a better play throwing home. Has anyone run into this before?

Once the ball is touched by the player, the baserunner can take off.

Caught means that the player has control over the ball. ie: If he is bobbling it and then secures it, the runner can only go after the ball is secured.

Edit:
Looking at the post below mine, I guess I was wrong.

Yeah but once the player touches it, the ball is then live and in play meaning the runner can go. Once he secures it the batter is technically out.

Otherwise someone could just pretend to bobble the ball while walking to the infield to stop people from tagging up.

Edit: And apparently that's why the rule was changed... See Link
