Have to laugh at anyone that's even remotely shocked by this. The unlimited payroll bitching is rather old now too. It is what it is, and we'll deal with it. Does it make them better, well I don't know. Does adding a guy that, when he retires, has a legitimate chance to be the best all around player in the games history make you better????? Hell yes it makes them better, offensively, defensively it's not even close, they get much better. Fact of the matter is the ownership of this team chooses to build a team based on in depth talent and character analysis, as well as payroll impact. You can't bitch and moan about the lack of effort on the Red Sox end, they reached for the stars on this, and it didn't fit.
I'm more than ok with that. You can argue this way and that in regards to who's talked to whom, how certain guys were handled and treated this winter. But no one other than the parties involved knows what's really happened and if you look back, most, if not all, of the negative comments directed at the Red Sox fall into this area. They've worked their asses off to make this team a world series contender, and we are, period. Arod to the Yankees, if it happens, just makes winning this whole thing that much sweeter IMO, when it happens.
It's another challenge, but after 85 years did any of you think that getting over this final hurdle and winning it all was gonna be a cake walk? No, it'll be more fun this way. This way, when we do win it all, and you all are out there flipping birds back and forth with Yankee fans, you'll be smiling a whole lot wider.
It was gonna be a challenge before this rumor, and with or without Arod the Yankees are going to be real real good, so let's move on, let whatever happens happen, and focus on the fact that the best Boston Red Sox team in the last 100 years takes the field in 7 days, for a ride that is guaranteed to be the most memorable of any of our lives over the next 8 months, and enjoy the hell out of it.

do you even know what baseball is? or are you one of those morons who proclaims their love for a team only to forget about them two weeks later?
If this trade happens, it will be one of the most damaging deals in baseball. It will set a precedent that small markets can't compete, they can't maintain a good enough roster. Please, the Yankees are destroying ever other team in baseball and pulling the whole thing down the tubes.

Why take the best SS in baseball and make him play 3B? Did I miss something? Shuffle Jeter's ass over to third. Don't tell me it's Jeter's team (which it is) because big Stein doesn't give a fvck and he's obviously running the show now.
*sigh* Thanks you players union, for killing a trade which would have been good for baseball and allowing one which is terrible for baseball :|

It's not like they signed a free agent. It's a trade, and they are giving up homegrown talent for it. So they're willing to pay $20 million more than the Sox, but if he would've gone to the Sox than everything is great, right? The Red Sox are trying to buy a championship just as much as the Yankees.
Regardless, this deal is bad for baseball.

You assume I'm a Red Sox fan or something. I'm not. I'm a casual baseball fan, with no real allegience towards any team. I'm more concerned for the GAME of baseball, not the Yankees, Red Sox, or whatever other team.
Baseball needs a salary cap, as well as a minimum salary level. Until then, it's going to be the Yankees vs the Red Sox vs the rest of the league. Sure, occasionally we'll see an upstart team like Florida go places, but that's going to be the exception, not the rule. The rich get richer, and everyone else tries to scrape by.

Well, you can't tell someone not to spend his money. It's an investment. George knows that if he puts a winner on the field, he ends up making money in the long run. He's a businessman, and a damn good one. He's willing to make the investment that's worked for him in the past, others are not. It's not all about the size of the market, just ask the Mets. That being said, would you have had the same problem is the Red Sox signed A-Rod?

The point of a salary cap is to limit spending and create more of a balance. So yes, you can tell someone not to spend his money. Ask every owner in the NFL, they have to deal with the same thing. Under the current rules, sure, what the Yankees are doing is fine. My point is the current rules stink. As I said, I'm not a Red Sox or Yankees fan, so stop trying to make this "well you just dont like it because the Yankees did it". I don't give a sh!t if the Yankees, Mets, or Red Sox did this, the teams WITH money just go and acquire every big star there is, whether or not they work out. Teams like Kansas City know they have no shot at any of these guys, and can barely afford Carlos Beltran, let alone Alex Rodriguez, Manny Ramirez, Gary Sheffield, etc. You don't think that there is a problem with that?
Baseball has a huge problem, the difference between the bottom tier teams and the upper tier teams, in terms of financial ability, is far too big. Steinbrenner doesn't care about a luxury tax, and neither does Boston management. The only solution for a competitive, balanced league is some kind of hard cap.
