If an unearned run is scored as a result of a pitcher error, does it count against their ERA?

I used to wonder about that too...

There are arguments for charging the run either way, really.

it is a run as a result of an error, hence unearned. After the ball is in play the pitcher is no different than any other fielder.
Pitchers win gold gloves for defense too.
ERA is a better indicator of a pitchers skill than is win-loss records

It does, but the current way is better IMO. You can use ERA to determine pitching ability and errors to see how good a pitcher is as a defensive player. You lose information otherwise.
