Greetings! Very soon (like in a week) Ill be putting together a brand new system for mostly gaming... I have another thread in the main forum link , which lists everything I'm planning on getting. I've been wondering though whether I should save an extra 80$'s or so and get an XP 2500 barton , instead of the 2800.The reason I don't want to get the P4's are due to the fact that I'll have to pay more for a seperate sound card which will run me over my budget. So I'm planning to stick with AMD for now.
thanks

Go with the 2500+. Even if you think you *may* try overclocking...you will 😉. Save the cash and o/c that sucker.

I'd go for the Barton 2500+ and use the extra cash to get some XMS RAM that is if you don't already have some and over clock that barton like crazy.

Why will you have to get a seperate sound card the Intel route? I think in your price range you may get better performance on the Intel side.

If you got cash to spend I dont see why you're not gonna go the Intel route. Look at the benches, eveb a P4 2.4c can give the xp3000 a run for its money.

2500+ is a great value! If my board took Bartons I'd be looking at it atm; too bad I can only upgrade to a Tbrd B.

If you have enough money it's always wiser to get the faster CPU instead of gambling on the slower one to overclock.

Its not really a gamble almost all 2500 Bartons pass the 3200Xp settings (11x200), I have a 2500 and it maxes out at 2350MHz 215x10.5. Its not a gamble cause AMD has not found a way to produce the lower clocked Bartons (2500) than the higher one (3000-3200) so its basically the same waffer/core/everything, the only differenc is the defult clock speed, Put a Barton 2500 in an NF2 mobo (e.g. Asus) and you a garantied at least 2200MH (3200XP) but as I said most go beyond that.

p.s.: get a good HSF (i would recomend: Vantec series)

For $90 get that 2500 no questions asked. Even a minor O/C with minor cooling will be adequate IMO.
Just remember, the memory you get will be just as crucial as the chip.

I run mine at 2100mhz (3000+), but at 3200+ 3dMark closes to the desktop after the first test. Looks like I've hit the peak with mine @ 3000+.

I just got the Barton 2500+....I am a first time Overclocker....I pushed it up to 2800+ speeds without issue.
