I'm considering purchasing a xp 2500+ barton cpu to go with another nforce2 motherboard, but in the meantime, I'm wondering if I will be able to run the barton on my current mb: the k7s5a.

will it just regisiter as a lower speed cpu (w/ fsb lowered to 133)?

or

will the mb just not even register the cpu?

thanks.

Check ECS's site for the mobo's CPU limitations. I'm about to walk out the door, or I'd like myself. Probably just need a bios update and it'd work fine though.

Well, it's a socket A mobo so it should work. May have to set FSB yourself. The desktop will be running @ 1463mhz (11 x 133), instead of 1826mhz (11 x 166).

Why not get a mobile Barton? They can run at 133 FSB (and 166 or 200 FSB), but with higher multi (14 instead of 11, so you can get to 14 x 133 = 1862mhz)

The K7S5A with a mobile Athlon XP 2600+ will automatically default to a 15x multiplier and will run at 2 gig (15 x 133). I did this myself, so i can vouch for it.
