barton in dual mobo?

Does anyone know if the upcoming barton's will work in dual mp motherboards that support 333fsb????????????????????

if i am correct, there will be no 333MHz FSB Athlon MP's because AMD is concentrating on Opteron

hi,

I was asking whether or not the Athlon XP bartons would work in Dual MP motherboards? I know amd isnt going to release any 333mhz mp's (which sucks, wish they would have gone to atleast 3000+)

If you mean out of the box support, then the answer is no - there are no dual AMD boards that natively support a FSB of 333MHz, at least not that I know of. You'll be able to install them almost certainly but they'll be detected at 266MHz FSB and will therefore be much slower than they should be.

However, you've always been able to underclock AMD chips before. As long as you can unlock the Barton so you can change the multiplier. Or use a dual CPU board that supports FSB overclocking. But don't expect to use one in any way while keeping a valid warrenty!

There are 2400+ Tbred B Athlon MPs and I also saw something somewhere about 2600+ Athlon MPs with a Barton core. AMD will be producing 266 FSB Bartons as they need their Athlon MP line to carry them into the next level.

I think the fastest FSB I've seen available on Athlon MP mother boards was 150, so 166 might not be possible... I could be wrong but I doubt you'll get any high FSB out of an SMP Athlon solution, the goal there is more on stability... extra cache in such a situation should help out AMD MP platforms against Intel's Xeon. Last I knew Athlon MP solutions are slipping farther and farther behind the Xeon, although they utterly crush the price performance aspect. 2600+ Barton MPs could pump some new life into the dying Athlon MP, but like bgeh said, AMD seems to be concentrating on their new CPU line and therefor will not refresh their Athlon MP chipset to support higher FSB speeds.

The AMD Processor Roadmap still shows "Barton MP": AMD's official roadmap I wouldn't be surprised if they announced the Barton AthlonMP's along with the Barton AthlonXP's, or soon after, because the Xeons have become more competitive and now hold the top-end (although at a huge cost of over $2000 per CPU for the Xeon MP's). If the initial cost isn't as important as cramming tons of processing power into 1U or 2U of space, then AMD needs to crank things up.

On the other hand, did you guys see the advertisement on AnandTech a few days ago for the 1U system with two dual-processor AthlonMP systems in it? That must be an interesting sight inside! 😀

Does anyone know when Opteron will be out and also what motherboard manufactures will be making boards for them? I despertatly need a server, but good thing is I can get by using a dedicated server until the Opteron's are out,b ut I want to know its going to be worth the wait. They will have 1MB cache, right? If they do, that will be ownage.
