I can't figure it out. This is the heatsink/fan I have (5500RPM fan): http://www.explosivelabs.com/reviews/copperx/index.shtml

I know it's not the best, but 80+ C under load doesn't seem right! I'm using plain white thermal compound, and it's applied correctly. Do you guys think a better HS/Fan will clear up this problem?
How about this one: http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=35-103-407&catalog=23&manufactory=BROWSE

It's recommened by AMD up to 3200+ so I would guess it should work good better than the crap I have now.

Thanks!

To me it looks like something isn't installed 100% correctly. Perhaps the HS isn't sitting perfectly on the CPU or the thermal compound (what did you use?) is sh!t or is not applied correctly.

Also the HS may have a very rough polish and is too rough to make perfect contact with the CPU core.

Either that or the motherboard or whatever it is you are using to record temp is reporting incorrect temp.

Load your cpu with the case open. Then do a hard shutdown and touch your heatsink and see how hot it is. If it's really hot, then the reported temp is probably right. If it's only warm, then your board is reporting temps off.

i second aelius, when i built my water rig, the lip of my block was sitting on the egs of the socket and was not making full contact with the cpu surface, nedless to sya the temp started out at 80 and reached almost 90 before i noticed, miraculously the cpu survived undamaged

Arctic Cooling Copper Silent 2M, GET ONE, I've got one in my main rig, it's absolutely silent, has wide fins, and a big copper base, + it has a fan controller, it's a pretty sweet deal for $18 :)

jkostans, check your heatsink orientation. After typing out instructions about one million times, I caved and made a photo guide on the topic :)

Again you the man. I wish I had come across you guide a long time ago when I was trying to figure out the heck with the socket A HSF's. Made a few mistakes and finally got the hang of it..

I had a Palomino XP2000 that just ran miserably hot. A better heatsink helped, but it just slowly got hotter and hotter. I just got sick of it and replaced it with an equivalently price proc (at the time), a 2100+ tbred, and it's ran much cooler.
