I don't know wich one to choose. Could you help me?
I'm going to use 256x2@333 DDR in an Asus A7N8X Deluxe with a 9700PRO.

If you don't plan on overclocking, get the XP2600... if you plan on overclocking, get the XP2500... you'll hit about the same speed with both processors for a maximum overclock, but the XP2500 will be faster because of it's extra cache.
 
2600's with a 266 FSB are rare... very hard to find... kinda pointless if you ask me since everyone seems to want a 200 Mhz FSB. My advice is get the XP2500... you're almost guaranteed to reach 2.2 Ghz, and with the newer cores people are hitting 2.3 more often now. If you don't want an XP2500... get an XP1700 with the DLTC3 stepping... those are great overclockers... about $60 if you buy one that's guarateed to have that stepping, and you can get 2.3-2.4 Ghz out of it. I still like my XP2500 more though... and now that they're under $100, it's an easy decision in my opinion.
 
I would recommend that Barton 2500+ because in a lot of benchmarks, the 2500+ Barton is actually faster than the 2600+. Here's a review of the Barton at Tom's Hardware that has benchies for both the 2500 and 2600. The 2500 and 2600 trades spaces alot, but in most benches, the 2500+ is better.
 
I asked this same exact question here a few days ago. As DarkKnight said it's pretty much a toss up performance wise with the benchmark's at Tomshardware between the 2 chips. Quite a few people are getting 3200+ speeds out of their Barton2500s so for overclocking it seems the Barton is the little CPU that could...

But the thing is that the mobo i want to upgrade is a A7V8X and i dunno if it supports the 333FSB! those manufacturers sure made a whole mess with their marketing-branding-upgrading stuff!
Would i be able to fiddle with the multipliers on the A7V8X? i sure can in the A7N8X though!

I'd go with a SLK800. works nicely for my 1700xp oc'ed to 2.3ghz 😀
 
My SK-7 does just fine, even with a junk fan on it that I took of a heatsink that I had for a 1.2 Ghz Athlon. 70mm 4500 RPM... my temps rarely go above 50... only above 50 under load if the room temp is above 78F... which is what... about 30 C? I think... something like that.
 
Thanks for the formula, could have used it yesterday. By the way, there is a XP2600+ Barton CPU coming out any time now. Maybe you can have both, a XP2600+ and a Barton

I'd say Retail for the warranty (3years) and the HSF but that is voided if you o/c and the HSF is also pretty useless if you o/c..

I've also heard and maybe someone else can set me straight that retail CPUs overclock better because they are hand picked and have to perform better then the OEMs. I remember hearing that some time ago and I think the discussion had to do with Pentiums and Celerons...
 
I did a lot of reading before buying my 2500+ retail yesterday. I have read that retail chip seems to overclock better than the OEMs as paperfirst said. Also, according to information I obtained the quality on the retail HS/fan are a lot better than the "old" days. and you can overclock with them more than you think without too much heat gain. I will be trying to determine what exactly I can get out of my chip without going over 50c.

Buying 333Mhz (PC2700) is a mistake you will regret very quickly! Spend a few extra bux on PC3200 (400Mhz), and you will be happier, and for longer.

Ah one more thing: pspada is 100% right!!! get a 3200 esp if you want to overclock.
(how about some 3200LL from corsair? 😉 )
 
i'll get the 2500+ then because you stated you wanted to oc
i also agree with pspada. pc3200 is the way to go if you want to overclock and it is more future proof
 
Be wary of HyperX too... there are some compatability issues with HyperX and at least Asus nForce2 boards... I don't know about Abit and Epox, but I've read lots of stuff about HyperX not even running at it's rated speed on Asus nForce2 boards.
