Barton 2500+ = What Intel P4 Speed?

I never really looked into AMD chips much but have come across the chance to get a AMD Barton core 2500+ processor. I was wondering approximately what pentium 4 chip this would be equivalent to. Thanks

It depends what you're using it for, but this article will give you a general idea:

That page shows general usage statistics, in which a 2500+ Barton is about the same as a P4 3.0 or 3.2. If you flip to the gaming benchmarks however, the Barton 2500+ is usually sitting around where the P4 2.26 or 2.4 are. Same with content creation and media encoding.

So if I'm trying to build an htpc would it be better to use a barton amd processor or a pentium 4 processor?

Well it all depends on how much home theater you will be doing.... if you are only going to be video capture and playback, media storage and other not so crazy things then either one will do you fine.... It all depends on how much money you want to spend. If however you will be getting into medium to heavy video editing and creation you should lean more toward P4 since that is still their forte.

TheStu is right.. if you're going to be doing heavy editing or encoding or anything like that, P4s are a better alternative.. then again it depends how much the one you're looking at costs compared to the Barton.

If I were you, I would not consider any P4 that is a Williamette (basically any P4 under 2.2 GHz), and would compare price/performance to what I would be doing (creation, editing, encoding, general use, etc.)

go with a via epia if its just an htpc. low power stuff can be cooled easily and quietly, so you can hear your music/videos/whatever. they are also very small

IMO...and from my extensive testing it is equal to the 2.4c in somethings and less in multimedia....However with that said a 2500+ can do all you likely need and is cheaper by quite a bit from a 2.4c. If it comes down to price for a cpu and mobo I bet the amd is cheaper and very much capable....

For that type PC, I would definitely use a mobile Barton. At stock speed the heat generated is a non-issue. Even when you OC a reasonable amount, heat still isn't a problem.
Most of the time big time cooling = big time noise.

My vote... The 2500+ Mobile Barton (35W). You can find them pretty cheap in the For Sale/Trade forum some times.

I'd definately go for a mobile XP chip. I have the 2600+ mobile and my particular CPU can do 1.9GHz (9.5*200) @ 1.3V. Also, it does 2.2GHz (11*200) @ 1.5V, which makes it easily possbile to cool with a good heatsink and a 12dB 80mm fan. If that isn't great thermal characteristics, I don't know what is.
