Barton 2500 vs P4 2.53: which is better?

I want to build a system (Nforce2 vs Sis 655) for gaming, video editing; I will NOT be overclocking.
I want the system to be quiet and reliable, and STABLE!

The Barton might do slightly better in gaming b/c of the additional L2 cache, but I'm not 100% sure b/c there is such a huge difference in clockspeed (1.83GHz vs. 2.53GHz). I don't think the 2500+'s PR is as accurate as some of the higher rated Barton's, as I don't think the additional L2 makes up for the 170MHz it loses to the 2400+.

The P4's really shine when it comes to video editing (or any non-predictable multimedia apps), and also do very well in games, so I'd have to say the P4 would be the way to go, with the only caveat of course being prices are similar.

I would get the 2.53GHZ, its only a little more and clocked higher. The retail P4 cooling is dead silent, just add some cheap NMB 20DBA 80MM and a Trupower PSU and you've got a silent rig.

Thanks, fellas. If I go with the P4, which mobo would you recommend? I'm thinking of one based on Sis' 655 chipset, but is this "stable" enough?

Gigabytes Sis 655 board seems to be one of the cheapest at $112, go do a search for reviews. Anand did one.

Personally I think a better choice would be an overclocked athlon xp system because it would be a lot cheaper. Although it would be louder. I really do not think you could go wrong with any of these systems. A barton at the stock speed does not need a real loud fan.

I have a Barton 2500 and a P4 2.8. If your not going to overclock, I would probably go with the P4 2.53 with an SIS655 m/b. But i would admit, its a close call. Th Barton 2500 on an nForce2 m/b is a super system.

So many choices.

Try a 2.4 P4 for $150, Albatron PX845PEV Pro mobo for $82, 512mb PC3200 for $120. Overclock it to 150fsb and run it at ddr400.
Don't be so nervous about OC. The C1 stepping 2.4 will run rock-stable and cool with the Intel HS/F at 150fsb. Use stock voltage and you'll have a reliable 2.7gHz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mine ran at 166 all day long and could loop any benchmark you throw at it indefinitely.

barton + nforce rocks
the fact that it is clocked so slow just means you'll get a helluva overclock
btw both systems should be 100% stable if you build them right and don't get broken parts or set yur bios settings wrong

reference links, you dont necessarily want to buy your proc from newegg.

if you were to get a p4 you should try to find a 2.4 w/ c1 stepping as they are cheaper than the barton. but since your not going to o/c a 2.4/2.53 from newegg would be fine. if you get a c1 pm me ;p
for a p4 mobo id go with asus p4pe, asus p4g8x, or an abit bh7

if you were o/c id lean more towards amd (p4 2.4 is a beast o/c though)

Well, if you refuse to overclock, I'd go with the P4. I'd highly reccomend getting the Barton and OCing it though, you should be able to get it to at least 2800+ speed without any trouble, and certainly without any loss of stability.

Try the MSI 655 board. I think anand gave it something like "the fastest p4 board they ever tested."

Video editing I'd go with a hyperthreading P4 3.06, you'd get a much bigger performance boost. But when comparing the 2500+ system to a 2.53 P4, I think the AMD system is a better value, especially with the new 333FSB, 512cache, and great deals on 2700 DDR memory sticks.

If you look at many recent threads, you'll notice that recent 2.4 and 2.53 P4's have consistently hit 3.2-3.5 ghz with just a small bump in voltage (be sure to buy OEM - tray cpus, though). Now if that isn't bang for your buck, I don't know what is.

I have nothing against the Pentium 4 at all but to get the most out one you're going to have to get PC1066 or PC1200 RAMBUS which is still quite expensive. That's why I'm going with an ATHLON Xp 2400+ if I ever can find an ABIT-NF7-S v1.2 mobo as the ATHLON and DDR-SDRAM are made for each other.:)

It is not, I repeat, not a lot cheaper. At new egg, the Barton 2500 is 170.00 and the P4 2.53 is 186.00. Only a sixteen dollar difference for better video editing capabilities and equal gaming power. Look for yourself right here.

Actually you're pricing the OEM Barton, the retail with HS/F is $176 so it's only a 10$ difference ;)

I've been looking for a review myself. There isn't any data on the chips at overclockers.com either.

Well... I just finished building a 2.53 P4 system for a customer. Here is the specs.

Albatron PX845PEV Pro
2.53GHz P4
1GB PC2700 memory Kingston HyperX (2*512MB)
200GB Maxtor 7200rpm HD
GF4 Ti4400 VIVO
Samsung 16X DVD-Rom
Pioneer 4X DVD-RW
Floppy
Viewsonic VG700 Flat panel monitor
Logitech Wireless keyboard/mouse
Windows/Office XP Pro
Epson 1660 Scanner
Epson C82 Printer
Misc. Roxio Software packages.
Misc software that came with various hardwares.
All wrapped in black/chrome/Metallic grey :)
1yr warranty

My price for him, $2600
You can get all that for about $2000 or less since you are doing it yourself and you do your shopping correctly.
Dells price for a unit configured the same $3200 + shipping.
You can always have the price lowered by going with a different monitor and exclude the printer/scanner. Might save you an additional $400 off.
The performance is great. Do not know about the reliability as of yet. But I expect no problems of it... I do not like putting 'junk' together as it is my 'name' I put on the line.
Sorry, it is no longer in my hands so I can not report its benching speeds. But it is in fact a fast computer.
I also think you will do better with an Intel chipset rather instead of a SiS chipset... but that is my opinion. Others may disagree.

Yeah I cant understand it. Barton only comes in 3 flavors.....realistically 2 so youd think both chips would be reviewed and even put head to head.
