Guys, I'm looking into buying a new athlon XP to replace me ageing palomino 2000+. I've got a budget of $90-$100. I cant decide between the barton 2500+ & the T-bred 2400+. The t-bred runs faster but the bartons got more cache, plus I'm planning to OC to at least 2.2Ghz. Which will be the better option? I've asked aroud the forum before about how well the 2400+ OCs coz that was my initial choice, but recent AMD price cuts have brought the barton 2500+ into my price range. Anyone have an OC'd barton 2500+? How far will it go? Need advice please.

if you OC then i'll get the Barton
it can hit around 2.2-2.3GHz

More importantly will your MoBo support the Barton?
Here are some medium results from a few Squares I've OC depending on the Date .
2500 Barton does 2.2 GHz
1700 @ 2.1GHz
2100@2.4GHz
2400@2.4GHz

Hey LED, what mobo, cooling, RAM, core voltage etc, etc,.. did u use for this OC? Is it possible to achieve good temperatures OCing a 2500+ to 2.3-2.4Ghz aircooled on an Coolermaster X-Dream cooler? That's what I plan to buy. Don't have enough money to invest in a more expensive cooler, plus I feel more compfortable OCing a 2500+ to 2.3Ghz than getting a 1700+ and spending the balance in a better cooler. Just preference, no techincal reason really.

I would imagine the Dreamcooler is a nice piece of cooling but have never used it. My Main Vein MoBo's and Coolers for OCing are:
Epox VIA 333 chipset (have 2 models) and the Abit NForce2er using the SKL800 and AX7 HS with 80mm Fans (various models pushing 30-50cfm)...2500 Bartons(tested3) have problems with stability @ 2.3GHz and up on air IMO, the deal to look into is the Barton. Best value IMO is the AX7 HS with low noise 30cfm+ Fan (maybe the Thermaltake Vocano9), and the JIUHB 0308 AMD XP 1700+ for about $90 shipped @ SVC...2.2GHz+ should be no problem.
Edit Spelling and added something ;)

I upgraded to a Barton 2500+ from an old Palomino 2000+ as well, and got a great speed boost at stock (I also have PC2700 memory, which I would recommend you upgrade to so that you can run sync the 166Mhz external freq of the Barton). Of course, since you seem to plan on o/cing more than just the freq multiple, I suggest you get PC3200 (i.e. increasing beyond 166 Mhz up to a potential 200 Mhz bus may require faster memory, naturally).

I'm using the Vantec Aeroflow cooler, and so far have done a "mild" overclock to 2.08 GHz (166 freq, 12.5X multiplier, 1.7V core), turning it into a virtual "2800+" without incident. I'm sure it's got more room to go, since this has only increased my idle temps by about 3 degrees celcius on my Asus A7N8X (i.e. 36 vs. 33!). Even under sustained full load, I haven't passed 41 yet! The Vantec is a hell of a cooler.

Hmm I just read your Rig and have the MSI KT3 Ultra2 vers 1.0 running a GXP180 40 gig and a Radeon LE with 128MB @ the shop. Maybe tomorrow I will pop in a Barton and let you know how it does ;)

Im probably wrong here but if you can OC the 1700($42) within 100mHz of the barton($93), wouldnt you get the 1700 and keep the change?

I'm building a new rigg so the Barton will be on an Asus A7N8X or Abit NF7-S, haven't decided yet. but anyway, let me know how it does.

It took on the MSI @ 2.2GHz and I have 1 on the Abit running 2250, rock stable and both low noise fans and AX7's.

Tough to argue with that. :)

The boost you get from the additional cache is probably worth the extra cash. I certainly think the extra money I spent on my 2500+ was well spent.
