The thing that makes me dislike Scientology more than most religions is that Scientology's leaders don't believe in it.

It also has more of a cult feel than the Branch Davidians.

I have to wonder about the leaders of other religions too. Does the pope really think that God talks to him? Don't the eldest Rabbis wonder where God was during the holocaust? Are these guys truly that brainwashed or just so comfortable in their cushy, church-financed lifestyles that it's just easier to go along with it.

that's only because it's still around. the Davidians have been out of people's minds for several years now.

And you think Christian church leaders believe everything in the Bible literally? Of course not. No serious Biblical scholar could. But they have no problem teaching it to kids literally. "Yes Timothy, Noah's ark really did happen... "

I'd imagine this is how Christianity first started. It was first seen as a loony religion, but gradually as time allowed practices to become tradition, the original meaning of the religion was morphed into what it is today.

that's the ultimate question really. I would like to think, in their benefit, that they don't really believe all the bullshit they talk. I mean, I know humans are gullible and all, but... are we THAT stupid? Sometimes I have no hope for humanity, other times I do. If the leaders are actually above the ideas of religion and are more grounded in reality than it seems.. then well, there is some hope for mankind after all. The sooner mankind can ditch religion and become unified, the better off we are as a species. Religion is a plague that's only purpose is to sooth the uneasy minds. But it only serves its purpose as long as science continues to not present answers to the questions that plague the minds of everyone.

It served a purpose hundreds of years ago when humans needed a base from which to organize. Now it's just extra baggage.

Bart Simpson Actress Gives $10 Million to Scientology

By kcampbell
Created 01/30/2008 - 10:46

Longtime Scientologist Nancy Cartwright ? best known as the voice of Bart Simpson ? last year gave the church $10 million to help spread the word of founder L. Ron Hubbard into other galaxies.

It was all part of Scientology?s Global Salvage effort, which aims to ?de-aberrate? Earth ? meaning to rid mankind of psychology ills and other ?aberrant? behavior.

Surprisingly, Nancy, 50, forked over twice as much as the Scientology?s most prominent member, Tom Cruise, who only gave $5 million in an installment plan.

In 2004, the 46-year-old Lions for Lambs actor was awarded a Platinum Meritorious Award for a $2.5 million gift. Two years later, he doled out another $2.5 million, for which the International Association of Scientologists kicked him up to Diamond Meritorious awardee.

Recent Scientology publications reveal that a host of A-list Scientologists were honored for their generosity at a black-tie awards ceremony at the church?s headquarters in Clearwater, Fla., last summer.

PageSix.com obtained copies of Impact magazine, which feature images of the various gold trophies, crystal statuettes and plaques "awarded to members who have donated" the respective amounts of money.

The Simpsons star (above) appears in a photo at the event with fellow Patron Laureate Awardees Steve Brackell and Jack and Lucy Murphy, as well as Church of Scientology leader David Miscavige.

Kirstie Alley matched Tom?s donation, but fellow actors John Travolta and wife Kelly Preston donated just a million each. Former Mrs. Elvis, Priscilla Presley, kicked in a relatively paltry $50,000.

Here are some of the celeb gifts from 2007 and their corresponding rewards:

Nancy Cartwright, 50, Patron Laureate Award: $10 million.
Kirstie Alley, 57, Diamond Meritorious Award: $5 million.
John Travolta, 53, Gold Meritorious Award: $1 million.
Kelly Preston, 45, Gold Meritorious Award: $1 million.
Priscilla Presley, 62, Patron Award: $50,000.
Nancy, like her fellow principal cast members on The Simpsons, has reportedly been earning $250,000 per episode since 2004, when her salary was upped from $125,000 per episode. At 22 episodes per season, that makes for an annual paycheck of $5.5 million.

Calls to Nancy's agent for comment were not returned at publication time.

It'd be funny if, in another 100 years, Scientology was a major religion along with Christianity, Judaism, Islam and Hinduism.

It'll be even funnier if they strap bombs to themselves and blow shit up.
