Barry Zito signs with SF Giants. 7 years for 126 million.

Its a good day to be a baseball player.. at least one team eventually offers you much more than you're worth.

I tried to get my son to throw left-handed but noooooooooo he had to favor his right-hand. Oh well, at least he still bats left. 😉

It wouldn't be so bad if these contracts worked like they do in the NFL where you can just fire a guy and void his contract... but these contracts follow the player forever. Talk about dumb. Is Zito even going to be pitching in seven years?

I didn't know his stats but now I think even less of this deal. Even if all of your starting pitchers were Barry Zito, you'd still be a .651 team. Now that sounds good, but not $18 million a year for 7 years good. 3.83 ERA? Must've been a slow year for him to win the Cy Young.

I agree, that is insane... but that's his market value. Zito's overrated - he's too inconsistent, often fails to go deep into games, and his K/BB ratio last year was alarmingly low - but he's still fairly young, he still pitches very well at times, and durable lefties aren't easy to come by.

Seems like an odd move by the Giants to take on such a huge salary with the team they have right now, though.

Dumb? Are you kidding? The NFL is so incredibly unfair to its players because there is no guaranteed money and the game generally kicks the crap out of guys. Granted, it's a little extreme in MLB, but still guys should be getting a good portion of guaranteed money.

Plus, yes, Zito should pitch seven years. He's 28.

That's what all the bonus money in the NFL is for. Most players/agents now that the x years for y dollars contract is pretty much meaningless. It is all about the signing bonus.

Bingo. There's always guaranteed money in the NFL. But when they need to unload a player they don't have to figure out how to trade the contract with the player. It's a much smarter business model than what the NBA and MLB works with.

Wow, talk about overpaying for a guy. Granted, if Zito at least pitched like he did when he first started, then sure you can argue he's worth the money, but not with his recent stats.

damn that's crazy!

I'm not too happy that he didn't join the Mets, but I'm real glad the Mets didn't pay that kind of money for him.

There is guaranteed money in the NFL. That's why you hear stuff like so-and-so signed for so-and-so much, with so-and-so dollars of it guaranteed. It's just not like the MLB where the entire contract is guaranteed.

Think about it this way: the part of the NFL contract that's not guaranteed is incentive money. Just like how the MLB has incentive money as well.

This is the Giants way of making everyone forget how they overpayed for Barry Bonds.

Exactly. In the Barry Bonds case, they should have just put $2M on the table and told him to take it or leave it. He's desperate enough to beat Aaron that he'd take it, and there were no other teams looking at him...not even as a DH in the AL.

The Giants needed an ace after they let Schmidt go to the Dodgers...I guess they got an expensive one. *Shrug*

My boy Zito took the Giants to the bank! Ha! This is hilarious.

Good for him. He's been one of my favorite players for years, and I bet what appealed to him from a personal stand-point is that he'll still be seeing his A's buddies all the time.

Sabean is a moron for paying him that kind of money. He's durable yes, but he isn't THAT good. Really, he had moments of brilliance during his A's career but his last two years were marred with inconsistency. We never knew what Zito we were going to get...

A's in 2007! Grats Zito!

Forgetting the money, I like that he agreed to fund youth baseball fields in the area. Overpaid or not you have to at least give a  to that. They may have overpaid but thats what it takes in todays MLB to get a front line, durable 28 year old lefty, with a career ERA under 4.

This chills me to the bone. Not because I care about Zito or SF.

When Carlos Zambrano comes on the market next year, the Cubs are either going to lose him or get reamed paying him 200 million.

Scott Boras is an evil genius.

you know, I don't know how he does it. He probably knows all the best prostitutes and drug dealers and offers free service to the team owner or something.
