5 years ago, most baseball fans would have said that Griffey Jr is CLEARLY the better baseball player of the two. in my opinion, he still is, BUT at this point most people will probably conclude that Bonds will finish his career with better offensive numbers than Griffey.

i'm not sure that Griffey is going to even break 600 hrs. i'd like to see him play 2 full season before i'm comfortable with his physical conditioning.

ya, but i'm not sure i made my point. the comparison between griffey and bonds was only part of it. the other part was how much griffey had lost in status because of a couple of injured seasons. (ok, more than a couple of subpar seasons). 5 to 6 yrs ago, most baseball experts felt that griffey had the best chance of breaking Aarons record, i doubt many people believe that any more.

If Griffey could have stayed healthy he would have shattered every record in the books. Its too bad...he should have stayed in Seattle. The ocean air kept him healthy.

it's surprising no one mentions griffey + steroids. Personally I don't think he did, but with all the conspiracy theorists out there, I expected his name to pop up sometimes (due to the fact that he can never seem to recover from injuries).

No matter what happened to Griffey, Bonds would still be one of the best ever. Nothing Griffey did would have prevented Bonds from being the only 500/500 man ever. He still has his gold gloves, he has his home runs, but Griffey was such a media darling.

5 years ago I never would have made such a statement. Bonds has been the most complete player in baseball for quite some time. Go back and look at the stats.

Wasn't Griffey the fastest to reach 400/500 HRs? Bonds was great for a long time, but Griffey was tearing it up.

I still think Barroid's numbers should have an asteriks next to it -- well, his 73 homer season at least.

Yeah, he was the fastest to 400 HRs. He's getting closer to 500 now (I think it's ~6 away), but he won't be the fastest there.

A-Rod's closing in tho -- he already broke Griffey's record as the fastest to 350 HRs.

without the power production, obp, walks that he's gotten in the last 5 yrs, bonds would "Only" have been considered a top 50 player. now he is talked about as a top 5 player, so bonds status in the realm of baseball immortals has changed. i'm a bonds fan BUT what griffey was doing up untill 5 yrs ago put him way ahead of bonds. griffey was play CF as well as or better than bonds was playing the corner OF position. CF is without question the hardest OF position of all. the only area where bonds had a clear advantage over griffey back then was in the area of Steals. and to be honest, no one back then thought that bonds power numbers would go UP this late in his career.

Griffey won the GG every year except his rookie year, 1990 to 1999 plus two MVPs. which puts him in the same league as Bonds.

the difference is, 5 yrs ago, most people believed Bonds was on the wane and Griffey was on the rise.

again, that irony is part of the point of this posts, how time changes things.

griffey jr was indeed INSANE.

his defense, his offense. it was truly amazing and only Barry's performance the last 4 or 5 yrs could overshadow what griffey was doing back then. if griffey had stayed at that level, he probably STILL would be considered the best bball player in the MLB.

This isnt a court of law, its the court of public opinion. If Bonds wasn't taking roids, why in blue hell would he refuse to be tested? It would dispel all doubt...but no, he did refuse, basically admitting guilt. Its like pleading the fifth...you don't admit to anything, but now the people know you have something to hide.

hahahahaha

how old are you?? 12??

do you honestly believe it is that simple?? if he took the test and PASSED nothing would change, people would STILL just say that he just found a way to get around the test AND he would have pissed off the players union BIG time.

there is NO reason for him to voluntary take the test.

Exactly -- all it would do is alienate his fellow players to mollify the fans and press, who Bonds has already proven to give a sh!t about. If he took a drug test, the press would focus on every other power hitter with added emphasis -- regardless of whether Bonds passed or failed.

Bonds was clearly better than Griffey 5 years ago, IMO. He was the best player of the 90's. Bonds was the best player in baseball even before his 73 homerun season.
