Barry is the greatest player I have ever seen and this was before the steroids. I couldn't care less how many home runs he ends up with. I just find it interesting that everyone hates him and everyone loved McGwire/Sosa. Barry would never have juiced had it not been for baseball's open-armed attitudes towards McGwire/Sosa. He was a hall of famer before then so what would have been the point.

That someone else was doing it is not an excuse.

He has shown that he will bend/break the rules. The record does not deserve to belong to him.

Somehow they still get ~40k fans per game, per stadium with 162 games on the schedule while other sports have trouble filling in a 18k capacity stadium on any given night. I really don't know what it is about baseball. I mean, I go to a few games every year, but just the sheer number of devoted fans... it's nucking futs.

Yeah, feel free to check the TV ratings or ask FOX why they dropped part of their postseason coverage.

I hope Barry destroys the record and keeps playing. I really couldn't care less if entertainers take performance-enhancing drugs. People take sports far too seriously.

It's less than it was before but that doesn't mean it isn't still huge absolutely. Otherwise, who's paying those $M contracts?

.

Sure he has athletic talent but the steroids (along with growing his head 2 sizes) have definetly helped him get to the point in his career that he is at. If that is not the case.. then why take them? Just to have large biceps for the photogs?

I am hoping for the lightning strike, but the truth is, Bonds has never been proven guilty for taking steroids. If he ever is then the HR title should be stripped.

He won't hold the title for long anyways, Alex Rodriguez will break it soon. That guy is insanely good.

Actually I'd pay to watch a 'All Enhanced League' - see how much an athlete is willing to fsck up their body to be the best. All sorts of muties and freaks would be awesome.

He's a cheater and seems like a prick. No, I will not recognize him as the true HR king.

Yeah you're right, becoming a roid monster had nothing to do with his insane HR totals of a few years ago when he never hit like that in his "prime"...

Bonds is one of the lowest forms of scum imaginable.

Steroid taking, wife cheating, finger pointing, responsibility dodging cheater.

I'm not sure that you understand baseball. Barry Bonds has been an amazing player his entire career. A lot of that is not attributable to accused steroid use. The guy has over 500 stolen bases in his career. His on base percentage has never been below .329, with a career average of .443. He's played through some ridiculous knee injuries and steroid talk and yet still had a .454 OBP last season, with 26 homers and 77 RBIs at the age of 41. He was a 5 tool player when he came up and that lasted for close to 15 years.

Me? No. He's not legit. Hank Aaron will always be the king. He did it clean.

Do you have any proof that Bonds did use steroids? Do you have any proof that Aaron did not? Just because someone played decades ago doesn't mean they weren't juicing.

Oh really? I'm not sure that you understand English. He said "as good as he is" which includes him mashing these insane number of HRs. I'm well aware of his past accomplishments and he was a HOFer before he smacked 73 homers. I never said he wasn't a great player, just that he wouldn't have been AS GOOD without a little extra help.

The difference IMO mostly relates to Bonds' attitude, especially toward the press - he has never been anything but a surly, arrogant cretin, whereas McGwire and Sosa treated the single-season HR record with reverence. In retrospect they too look like cheaters, but it wasn't AS obvious, mainly because McGwire, in particular, appears to have juiced for nearly his entire professional career, whereas Bonds started relatively late. The changes in Bonds' physique, and his power numbers are stunning - how many players get better, especially that much better, in their late 30s?

Bonds is an arrogant thug, but I still hope he breaks the record just so his staunch detractors can keep crying foul over something he never got caught doing and Baseball allowed him to do. If you ask me, I say he earned at least 80% of his home runs and 80% of his MVP awards while NOT doping and only started after seeing McGuire and Sosa do their thing. So if he wanted to risk his health and life for more statistics and records, then that's his (and many other player's) prerogative. But I'll say this, like it or not he's still the son of another very talented Baseball player. Greatness in this sport has always been in his genes and performance enhancing drugs can only supplement how great he is to a certain extent.

I don't like the guy but still feel his achievements in this sport are being minimized because of speculation and lack of care on the part of Baseball. And please, don't give me this "Won't somebody PLEASE think of the children" BS. Parents need to instruct their own children on the dangers of these drugs and shouldn't be pointing fingers at athletes competing against each other who choose to destroy their own bodies for the sake of performance. My thoughts on this might not be popular opinion, but I can't negate all his accomplishments because I hate the guy and think he may have done something towards the end of his career to keep from declining.

he was an asshole far before the roid scandal

many people dope, as much as the fans dislike it, we have to accept the reality that it evens the playing field.. no point in singling out 1 doper... but either way hes always been a huge jackass
