Bonds is an arrogant thug, but I still hope he breaks the record just so his staunch detractors can keep crying foul over something he never got caught doing and Baseball allowed him to do. If you ask me, I say he earned at least 80% of his home runs and 80% of his MVP awards while NOT doping and only started after seeing McGuire and Sosa do their thing. So if he wanted to risk his health and life for more statistics and records, then that's his (and many other player's) prerogative. But I'll say this, like it or not he's still the son of another very talented Baseball player. Greatness in this sport has always been in his genes and performance enhancing drugs can only supplement how great he is to a certain extent.
I don't like the guy but still feel his achievements in this sport are being minimized because of speculation and lack of care on the part of Baseball. And please, don't give me this "Won't somebody PLEASE think of the children" BS. Parents need to instruct their own children on the dangers of these drugs and shouldn't be pointing fingers at athletes competing against each other who choose to destroy their own bodies for the sake of performance. My thoughts on this might not be popular opinion, but I can't negate all his accomplishments because I hate the guy and think he may have done something towards the end of his career to keep from declining.
