barrel of oil to gas

A barrel is 42 gallons of volume. Thus if oil was pure gas, we'd get 42 gallons of gas per barrel. Of course that is silly, oil is in reality a lot of stuff mixed together. Typically, only half of the oil is gasoline, so you get ~20 gallons per barrel.

When you distill the oil, you have a little flexibility in choosing how much gas to make from it (in a tradeoff between gas and other products). And different types of oil have slightly different amounts of gas. Thus, the 20 gallons per barrel number is quite approximate.

i was just reading a article on yahoo news about how the nation average price for gas is $2.53 They were saying from a barrel of oil, we can get 42 gallons of gasoline from a barrel of oil.

anyone want to scale that to when gasoline was hovering around $1/gal and crude was at ~$15/barrel...and then look at todays numbers
