My cousin Krista and her husband Billy just had a baby boy...no name yet.

He was born with a heart defect and they just did a surgery today and he'll need another one in a few months. He's doing fine now...although he's all hooked up to a bunch of wires and a machine. Very heart breaking to see.

Krista and Billy are staying strong of course...they have to.

I know everything is going to be fine...just needed to share with you all:)

Here's a picture of Billy and the baby before the surgery at 4 days old.

Ayuh, my niece had open heart surgery when she was about three weeks old almost eight years ago. She just had a second surgery at the end of May. She's doing tons better now. Medical technology is an amazing thing. :)

I hope the wee one's all right.

Yeah, my sister had transposition of the great vessels. That means blood was going from the heart-to-lung-to-heart and heart-to-body-to-heart so the body couldn't recieve oxygen and my mom said she came out really blue. Thankfully she survived and is living well.:) My thoughts will be with the baby boy.

Oh good! That's nice to hear!

One of the baby's pulmonary arteries is coming off of his aorta (instead of the main
pulmonary artery) so they were concerned about his breathing. He is able to breast feed which of course is fantastic...they did'nt think he'd be able to.

The did closed heart surgery today and they put in a shunt and repaired the pulmonary artery. He is in the ICU and took some time to stabalize, his lungs and heart have to get used to the new system. He's out of it for now so that his heart won't work too hard. He seems to be doing well now and the staff are just working on maintaining him.

Thank you for everyone's kind thoughts!:)

Me too! That baby comes from some very strong genes so I know he'll be just fine! :) Thank you though!

A good friend of mine also has a son that had open heart surgery at a week old. He is doing great, acts like any other baby. Keep in good spirits, doctors today can do some amazing things.

I wish him and his family the best.

I believe it's more common than you'd think for infants to have heart defects. Many times the heart just hasn't developed fully yet. Surgery is even more rare, but, I know they are in good hands and I'm sure everything will work out OK.

That said, one more thing to worry about is never good. I hope for a quick recovery!

Thank you everyone! I'm going to send my cousin a link to this thread so she and her husband can see just how many wonderful people there are who care!:)
