What I have now...

Asus P5GD2-X motherboard
P4 (Prescott) 3.2 OC to 4.15GHz
2GB PC4200 RAM
EVGA 8800GT Superclocked

The videocard came with Crysis, and although it is an improvement over my GeForce 7950, I am still only high 20's to low 30's FPS on MEDIUM settings at 1024X768. Who plays at that resolution??? :)

I think my CPU is holding me back from playing at high settings, and at least at 1280X1024 (17" monitor, so that's my max anyway)

Want to upgrade all hardware, with the exception of the videocard and hard drives of course, so here's what I have in mind.

Why yes...yes I would :) Thank you. Other than that, should I just try and find a CPU that is not a retail box (without hsf as I am already getting the Tuniq?) My brain is frozen, and I cannot for the life of me think of what it is called when you buy just the processor :(

Try playing at 800x600 with all settings low and see if it plays faster.
Good way to find the bottleneck.

My slow ass system plays at 800x600 low detail @20/27 fps

You could just get a bare OEM processor, but keep in mind that they don't come with a warranty. Up to you how much that warranty is worth to you.

Don't "really" think I need a warranty, but unless OCing would void it, I don't see why not get one.

Hmm...I have an X2 4400+ currently with an AGP Radeon X1950Pro and it plays Crysis just fine at 1280x800 (half the resolution of my 30" widescreen).

I don't know what kind of FPS I'm getting but it's plenty playable.

If my fps improved at 800x600 at low settings (which it DID) what does that mean? CPU is the bottleneck?

If I wanted to overclock, I would go for the one with the higher multiplier (E6600).

E6600: X 9
E6759: X 8

Your cpu is the bottleneck. And A rather large one at that.

Whelp...I know what I need to do then. Spend more money :) I guess it IS true that a computer is never finished...only between upgrades :)

Now too bad though, 400 and change. Thanks for the help gents, and a very Happy Thanksgiving to all.

I'm awaiting my 8800GT to replace my 7950GT KO. I hope mine runs halfway decent. I know it's not gonna be able to run everything on max.

My C2D is only an e6400 overclocked to 3.2GHz.

A quick "other" question. If I have a modular PSU with it's own 6 "pin" power cable...is that good? Or do I have to use the supplied cable with the 2 molex connections on the other end?

Changed motherboard to Abit IP35 Pro, and will be going with the e6750...not the 6600 (either e or q) :)

Just an update. I got my e6750 and decided to go with the Gigabyte motherboard (for the lower price) and 2 gigs of PC6400 memory, and now FarCry II ( :) ) runs between 55 and 60 fps on medium settings at 1280x1024 res! No overclocking at all. I like the 8800GT now!!!

Yeah, I meant Crysis...sorry for any confusion, I was just being a smart@55 :) I am playing at DX9, as I do not have Vista (yet?).
