Well, I havent kept up with the new (or old) tech for some time, as far as cpu's amd MB's. What I have now is a 400/800 FSB with a pent 4 2.??? cpu and the pc3200 memory.
Would going to the amd 64 x2, mb with FSB 1000MHz (2000 MT/s). I think it can use my old pc3200 mem too. Improvement?

With a 2.xx Ghz P4, you'd see a fair improvement by upgrading to a 2.xx Ghz Athlon X2. You wouldn't be able to use your PC3200 RAM, though, unless you bought a Socket 939 X2, which wouldn't be a big deal, if nearly all of the decent motherboards for them weren't already gone.

It is a 939 socket. I usually stick with intel, so i dont know how the amd 64 compairs except it seems to be 64bit. I dont think the p4 are??? (shows you how much I know about it)

ps. heres the ones I'm looking at. Wanting to stay under $300.

I know people laugh at Tom's hardware but why don't you look at their CPU charts? At least you'd have some idea what you're looking at.

I believe the new CPUs from AMD and Intel both require DDR2 memory.

This is the only one of those barebones that I'd pay any money for at all: link. It's got a very decent motherboard, compared to the rest. Of course, I'm an overclocker, that's probably the reason I like that MSI board. And here's the chart that coolpurple was referring to: THG cpu chart.

Thanks for the replys. UPDATE: I remembered a place I've ordered from before and might go with them/this DITcorp
Going with the 4200 cpu and asrock mb from the dropdowns. But I'd need to get all new memory. I could use my same case, my X-QPack. But the one linked above looks good too, for using my current memory.
