Im thinking about getting a Maxtor 160gb sata @7,200. I found a great price at Zipzoomfly but its a Baredrive, Its not bc of the cables, im only worried on the packaging anti-static bag, not a box. Can it get damaged if its not properly shipped?

I would assume that before shipping they would put in it a larger package, for FedEX or UPS to take. Especially if you ordered something small to go with it, like cables or something.

The packaging usually refers the the box the drive would come in, the way you would see it had they put it on a retail shelf.

Any decent vender will package it properly. If you get it and the packaging looks wrong, exchange.

For over 8 years, all I have ever gotten were "bare" drives. They are excellent. Amcurrently using 8 of them - no problems. Other that the drive itself, what else is needed? Bare simply means an OEM package devoid of adapters, cables, screws, manual, etc., etc. It is the bare essential - nothing more.

If you bought a MOBO and case you'll have everything you need for the drive, also it'll come in bubblewrap and LOTS of peanuts.

OEM Bare drives are fine. Resellers are adept at shipping them and any good retailer will package them in an antistatic bag and then bubblewrap and peanuts, or they will use molded foam. When I worked in support at my last company, we always overnighted OEM drives with preloaded and configured software in boxes with molded foam and never had any problems, as long as the shipper didn't run it over with a forklift.
