Will you be buying a Barcelona when they come out on the 10th or will you be waiting for the Phenom?

This of course only applies if you haven't already gotten a Q6600 :)

Barcelona is a server part, i.e. you need an expensive dual socket motherboard to run it. Phenom is the brand name for the equivalent desktop part to be released some time before 2007.

Which socket does it run on? If it's AM2/AM2+ then its an Agena core aka Phenom rebadged as Opteron (Similar to the old 1xx Ops and Conroes rebadged as Xeon 3xxx on Skt 775). Barcelona parts run on socket 1207 I believe.

Well, I guess it would be a 1 socket opteron then...

Hmm, so are there single socket motherboards which will support barcelona?

Pardon my ignorance :)

Yes, when the desktop parts come out at the end of the year.

AMD thinks it should release Server parts first, well it worked for them last gen.

Newegg shows (2) AM2+ boards available now.

Not exactly. It's just one budget motherboard.

From a Customer Review:

Biostar's marketing this motherboard as an AM2+ motherboard, when you really aren't going to get ANY of the features of AM2+. This is simply an AM2 motherboard that will take AM2+ processors without a BIOS update.

Even if a C2D user hasnt' gotten a Q6600 yet, 965p boards can be upgraded to Q6600 which at 3.2-3.5ghz will be plenty fast. Even if Phenom is faster than an overclocked Q6600 (highly unlikely), it's hard to overcome spending additional $100 on a new mobo to move to Phenom...AMD really blew it this time. The only way for them to regain market share is to target consumers with old rigs that havent' upgraded to C2D yet. Luckily for them majority of users are still on single core so if they price the product right and it performs well, they can make an impact in sub $200 market.

UP opteron will be Budapest core, which will feature HTT3.0; Barcelonas are strictly for DP and MP parts.
