Wow, who would have thought this could ever be a blockbusting duo

Warner Bros.' "Barbie" tallied around $155 million during its first three days in theaters, the highest opening of 2023.
Universal's "Oppenheimer" snared $82.4 million during its debut.
Analysts expect this weekend to be the highest-grossing weekend of the year at the domestic box office.

Haven't seen Oppenheimer yet, but Barbie was surprisingly good. There were probably 999 ways it could've have sucked, but they really pulled it off.

I wish I could see Oppenheimer on real IMAX, but the closest one is 4 hours away and is basically sold out for the next 3 weeks.

As someone that loves going to the movies hopefully this is a sign that non-super hero movies are coming back and not just a one off.

Seriously? S***.

I'm very happy to hear that though. I don't know how many people under 50 or 60 really know that story and it really is quite a story.

Yeah, my friend in Atlanta is in the same boat. The real IMAX there is sold out as far out as they are selling tickets (3 weeks).

I have one question. Do Barbie and Ken now have genitals?

If you're in North Jersey, there should be plenty of options. If you're in the city, I would hold out for Lincoln Center. Never heard it called Lincoln Square but apparently that's the proper name. Anyway, never been to that theater but I've heard it one of best IMAX venues around. Take that for what it's worth.

I'm willing to bet that the issue never "comes up."

It does come up and the answer is No.

There are very few true 70mm IMAX theatres in North America. The only one around here is the Sony Lincoln Square, where I saw Dune 2, and that is in NYC. It's easy to get to for me, but, it's sold out for weeks. North Jersey will have some big IMAX screens but zero of the true 70mm ones. That screen is completely insane. Dune on that thing was just stunning. I've seen various IMAX documentaries at that theatre as well. I remember over 20 years ago eating mushrooms and going there and watching the IMAX documentary on Everest. The same year Jon Krakauer climbed Everest for his book Into Thin Air, also the same year it was a huge tragedy with one or two well-known and regarded top tour guides died on that mountain, plus a bunch of others. The one guy had to say goodbye to his wife knowing he was going to die. It was intense.

What was annoying was the switches from the full 70mm experience to portions of the movie which use a regular IMAX part of the screen in Dune. Turns out, the 70mm IMAX cameras are so goddamn loud, they can't use them in scenes that are totally dialogue focused on the quieter side of volume. You'd think they could filter it out with tech, but I guess not. It's the same reason Oppenheimer switches back and forth from the two formats.

Yeah, from what I've heard about Barbie, I would actually be willing to watch it.

It's good enough that I think the vast majority of non-womem haters will enjoy it. Last I looked it had gotten 90% fresh from viewers and critics on rotten tomatoes.

They also apparently had a transwoman as the doctor barbie. I didn't notice anything special about her in real time, but read about it in a story later.
