Barbecue sauce

Does anyone know of a good barbecue sauce that's readily available? All of the ones at grocery stores seem to be nothing but ketchup with extra HFCS and liquid smoke (more or less). What do you like, or do you resort to making your own? If you make your own, please share your recipe.

I usually use Kraft Honey BBQ or KC Masterpiece is pretty good as well. They do have HFCS though, so this might not be what you're looking for. I use BBQ sauce on everything though, fries, burgers, chicken, anything meat, or fried.

I have my Gran-Ma's recipe, I will post it up when I get home

I tried some of that new budweiser BBQ sauce the other day and it was pretty darn good for something you can get in the store nationally I would imagine....

Usually the only things decent from the store are the local stuff....

Sweet Baby Ray's is by far the very best we have eaten from a bottle.
Hang on one second and i will give you the recipe we use when we make from scratch...

ive actually heard KC masterpiece is a fine bbq sauce.

i also like cattleman's variety of flavors. have had a lot of success with all of them.

i myself am on a mission this summer to find a good bbq sauce that isn't insanely priced that is sweetened with something else beside high fructose corn syrup.

Another vote for Sweet Baby Ray's here. Good stuff.

Agreed as well. If it has to come from bottle, Sweet Baby Ray's is THE best.

I don't eat BBQ very much, but you might try Sauers BBQ sauce. It has been a while since I had any of it, but my brother used to use it all the time.

That's what we've been using lately. It's ok, but there must be something better. I was looking through the selection at the grocery store yesterday and they all have HFCS as the first or second ingredient. Sweet Baby Ray's has it for the first ingredient. Considering that you slather the stuff on what you're eating, I am reconsidering feeding it to my kids all summer.

Ok, try this one if you want to go the homemade route!

2 cups pineapple juice
1 to 2 jalapeno chilies, seeded and minced
1 tablespoon minced fresh ginger
2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro
3/4 cup ketchup
3 tablespoons cider vinegar
2 tablespoons worchestershire sauce
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon soy sauce
salt (just a little) and freshly ground black pepper

1. Combine the pineapple juice, chili, ginger, and cilantro in a heavy saucepan and boil until reduced by half.

2. Stir the ketchup, vinegar, worchestershire sauce, brown sugar, and soy sauce. Simmer the sauce until richly flavored and slightly thickened, 10 minutes. Add salt and pepper to taste.

You can take out the peppers if you dont want it spicy.

We now use Sweet Baby Rays, although, we used to use Cattlemans from CostCo, which is used in virtually every restaurant.

This is one i found on a BBQ website we get most of our smoking/grilling/bbq recipes from. I have not personally tried it but i will this weekend!

Ingredients:
1 large juicy lemon
1 clove garlic, peeled and lightly crushed with the side of a cleaver
1 thin (1/4-inch) slice onion
1 cup Dr Pepper
3/4 cup ketchup
3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
2 tablespoons A.1. steak sauce
1 tablespoon of your favorite hot sauce, or more to taste
1 tablespoon cider vinegar,or more to taste
1 teaspoon liquid smoke
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
Coarse salt (kosher or sea)

Cut the lemon in half cross wise and cut a 1/4-inch slice off of one half. Remove any seeds in this slice. Juice the remaining lemon: You should have 2 to 3 tablespoons juice.

Place the lemon slice, 2 table spoons of the lemon juice, and the garlic, onion slice, Dr Pepper, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, steak sauce, hot sauce, vinegar, liquid smoke, and pepper in a heavy nonreactive saucepan and gradually bring to a boil over medium heat.

Reduce the heat slightly to maintain a gentle simmer. Let the sauce simmer gently until thick and richly flavored, 10 to 15 minutes. Taste for seasoning, adding more lemon juice, hot sauce, and/or vinegar as necessary and seasoning with salt to taste, if desired.

Strain the sauce into a bowl (or clean glass jars) and let cool to room temperature, then refrigerate, covered, until serving. The sauce will keep for several months in the refrigerator.

I've been using Famous Dave's Smokey Chipotle BBQ sauce lately. It's good stuff.

Also, if you ever travel through Columbia, Missouri, pick up some "Show-Me BBQ Sauce." It's made locally and only distributed locally. Good stuff.
"Finally, a Show-Me specialty. Show-Me Bar-B-Q is a smoky, sweet-sour barbecue sauce produced by a local character with a passion for his craft. Harry H. Berrier, DVM, manufactures it in his basement in Columbia (talk about home made!). It?s tasty, all natural with no extenders and, interestingly, doesn?t need refrigeration." - http://www.offbeattravel.com/columbia-missouri.html
Show-Me BBQ can be found in most super markets around Columbia; it makes a great gift. One can call 1-573-442-5309 for mail orders.

see if your grocery store carries Famous Dave's bbq sauce. Their Sweet-n-sassy is very good for sweet sauce, and their Texas pit is good for medium-spicy. They also have Devil's spit for really spicy, and a few other flavors that I can't remember ATM. If you really want something good, take their sweet-n-sassy and texas pit, and mix them in a 3ss:1tp ratio. Damn tasty with a bit of spice.
