One of the best horses we've seen in a long time is career ending injured. I hope he isn't put down. 🙁

What a weird race. He was so powerful he BROKE through the starting gate when they were loading. They had to reload him.

There will be plenty of this in the sporting news.

Final
8 - Bernardini wins.
7 - sweetnorthernsaint
3 - Hemmingway's key.

Trifecta paid close to 4,000 dollars.

He was one of the best horses since secretariat. Really sad.
-edit-
Fracture above and below the ankle. 🙁
He's done.

Let's hope he can still be bred. He was unbeaten until this race. absolutely dominating horse.

I'll agree that he was an awesome horse. However, the part about being unbeaten is fairly irrelevant: what was he, 6-0? 7-0? He hadn't been in that many races...

its WAY too soon to tell. The surgery is awkward, theres a couple of main artieries back there that if compromized he would loose the hoof and the options are there, but his life would be bad, and thus euthanisation would be a fair option. Even after the surgery he will have to be kept off it, yet kept standing (if a horse stops standing he is trying to starve/kill himself), and kept eating. The more i watch the video and read in the drf/espn/etc the more i see things that i've seen before that just dont look good. This is going to be either another miracle like Seabiscuit or one of the greatest tragedies in horse racing.

Drakkon,

thx for the inside info.

He's standing.

""You do not see this severe injury frequently because the fact is most horses that suffer this typically are put down on the race track." "

It look like the post op is going well. Time will tell. I'd love to see him walking/jogging in a couple months. Hopefully he can continue the boodline with an outstanding dam. It'd be amazing to see his colt running in the Derby in the next 3-4 years.

Weird question: If he survives, but can't mount... can his sperm be sold or artificial horsemination?

you can buy bull sperm on the internet, so i'd imagine you could do the same for horses.

it's a good sign that he can walk around, or so i heard on the radio earlier. apparently a lot of horses get further injuries when they first come up from the anesthetic, they panic and try to run. assuming the circulation in his foot is good and he doesn't get an infection he'll be ok, but he still has a long way to go. odds should be better than 50/50, as those were pre-surgery odds.

According to the linked news article they are the post odds as well, based on the probability of infection.

Vet said he's looking even better today. Scratched his ear with his left rear leg (meaning he put all his weight on the repaired right rear ankle). So everything is going really well.

It will still be months before he's truly out of danger. But signs are promising.

Unfortunately, the latest word is that it doesn't look too good. He has a serious infection and odds are reported being "slim".

well that sucks. He was doing so well. Apparently they replaced the plates/screws and treated infection on Saturday and he hasn't been doing well since.

I'll keep my fingers crossed.

He was dominating and winning by 10+ lengths against other good horses in big prep races.

Secretariat showed the same kind of dominance.

Heck, remember perfect drift? I saw him run at churchill a few weeks ago and he STILL won and he's like 7-8 years old. Barbaro would have dominated for years.

It's the "oh, so sad" hyperbole kicking in. He was a fine young three year old and had great potential. But one triple crown race does not a Secretariat make. Comparing a horse to Secretariat after the Kentucky Derby is like comparing a basketball player to Jordan because he scored 40 points ONCE.

yeah i saw the article on espn after someone posted the link to the woman winning $21k on a $0.10 bet.

can someone explain how a horse breaking a bone in its leg is a serious or life threatening injury?

i know humans and horses are not the same but if a human broke his ankle, he'd recover.

why is it so life threatening for a horse?

thanks ahead of time.

Not all horses with leg injuries need to be put down but horses need to stand (or if they lie down can only do it for short periods of time) and if any injury is severe enough where they can't stand, they become sick and will eventually die.
