Time.com online link - Why Is Obama's Middle Name Taboo?

Online, the onomastics are already in high gear. Lefty bloggers, in full Obama rapture, point out that Hussein means "beautiful". One conservative observer insinuated that Obama, as a Christian with a Muslim name, might be marked for death by even our allies in the Islamic world, if they think he converted from Islam (for the record, he was never Muslim). By that ornately twisted logic, though, one might add that it was the martyrdom of Hussein in the year 680, beheaded at Karbala in a clash with the caliphate, that gave rise to 1400 years or so of Sunni/Shi'a violence. So how on earth could Obama be a fair broker in Iraq?

The real problem is that if the right wants to start a whispering campaign about the name Hussein, Obama is only helping them. By cutting short the discussion, Obama is banishing his name to the voters' subconscious, where the dark opposites of hope ? bigotry and fear ? can turn the word over and over again in their minds until November.

I think this last point is very very good. Obama (and his campaign) should never be ashamed or shy about his middle name. By making it taboo, he plays into the insecurities and prejudices and stereotypes that joe six pack has about Middle Eastern culture.

On the contrary, he should use his full name as often as possible. If he becomes President, his full name will be used. Why not start now?

OMFG!
Obama sounds like Osama
Hussein...must be related to Saddam
Barrack? Sure doesn't sound very American to me...

Nope, we need a President with a good-old American sounding name like John, Jim, Bill or George...well, ok, not George...the last one ruined it for the first one...:D

Yet another radical righty posting his advice and concern for a democrat, how sweet.

A lot of ignorant right-wing voters will oppose Obama because of his names. The more they hear 'Hussein', the more they think, 'well he must be like Saddam, an enemy'.

Even the Republican party has officially criticized the campaign tactic of trying to spread insinuations about his name.

So leave it to being a tactic to condemn. His name's not a secret; it isn't a legitimate campaign issue, either.

How often do you hear Bill Clinton referred to as William "Jefferson" Clinton? There's a reason this a-holes are referring to Barack by his full name and that's to appeal to the subconscious of the bigoted voter.

Names, race, religion.. don't matter anymore. It's about who's going to retain and return our freedoms.

According to rule of law, Barack Obama is more American than John McCain who isn't even qualified to be President according to the Constitution.

I think I'll pass on the foreigner for my President, thanks.

It isn't. It is in how one uses his middle name. The McCain event was disgusting where the radio commentator kept using Obama's middle name in a very demeaning manner.

I am and have been a conservative Republican for 30 years, but will not accept such obvious bigotry from any side.

That's it into a nutshell. Whenever someone tries to make it into a campaign issue, it's only for one reason.... to try to use fear and bigotry to take votes away from Obama.

If someone who was attacking Mitt Romney kept pointing out that he was a Mormon over and over in a speech, I would be just as disgusted. I expect better from any presidential candidate than to use these tactics or accept it from those working for them.

Thats right. If I do not vote for Obama it is because I am a racist redneck who thinks he is Saddams husseins cousin. I mean it would have nothing to do with the fact that I would not cast a vote for someone with a liberal record and plans as his.

Believe me, here in Tennessee I had to endure the same thing in the 2006 elections. I was a rascist because I did not vote for the black candidate Harold Ford Jr.

Quite possibly the most inane and uninformed post in the history of the internet.

Obama is correct to avoid the discussion. It is merely a distraction meant to avoid issues.

Agreed. Unless the sarcasm is over my head, his rates as a post that will taint anything this joker ever says again.

Funny how you attack me for posting, but not Time magazine for writing this piece (that I mostly agreed with). Advice, yes. Concern, no. I could not care less if his middle name were Manson.

Perhaps the middle name Hussein bothers you? Or it bothers you that his middle name doesn't bother me?

AFAIK, Romney answered all the Mormon questions. The best way to disarm prejudices is to be up front, answer the questions, and not be defensive.

actually although I know you were trying to peg the sarcasim meter.
Obamas cousin ( Raila Odinga) is actually now in charge in Kenya. And Barack went to Kenya to campaign for him.
Some of the results of his cousins power grab as I understand it are:
1) 1000 people died.
2)500,000 displaced or homeless.
3) sharia law will now be the law of the land for the entire country.
4)All other religions are banned.
I'm feeling the love.

Huh? Middle names are rarely commonly used.

As far as the reason goes, it's so we don't have to have the 'joe six pack' morons flooding our Email boxes with messages about Obama swearing in on the koran. Actually, too late... Anyway, that's the reason.

If he doesnt need to defend it, Then why is he hiding it?

It's insulting, (not to mention bigoted in itself, oh the irony) to assume that people are going to hold it against him before they do.

You complain about bigotry, yet post crap like this. Liberals are the most discriminatory people around. ironic, as they call reps bigots all the time to get elected.

Dems should realize that Obama will get far more people to vote for him simply because he's black, than people will vote against him simply because he's Black/Foriegn Name.

Dems hoping for true transparency would be giving up the most powerful tool (the race card) that dems have had for decades.
