Bar tab double what receipt says?

I went to a local bar/club last evening and opened a tab with my card. After the night was over the tab was $18.50, I left a pretty decent tip and have the receipt here to prove it.

This morning I check my bank statement and it's for $50?!

Is it typical practice to authorize a certain amount of money to open a tab and then correct it later or am I going to have to call this place up and ask them wtf is going on?

Is it still pending? If so, its a bigger hold than most places do, and I would'nt start a tab/drink their anymore but it should correct itself. Hang on to the receipt in case.

Why would the bank know? The place I'd call would be the bar but I wanted to find out if this was standard.

I called the bar, she said 50 was the standard they take out and it will clear in 3-5 days. I don't really care about the 25 bucks too much but I just wanted to make sure this wasn't some shady sh!t.

They don't get to take $50 out if I did'nt approve it. They can put a hold on it for $50, but they can't take $50 and put 30 back in.

That's my stance.. the only reason I bothered posting this thread was because it actually went through..

Personally, in the jobs that I worked, we never did that. At this point, I'd be calling up the bar demanding an explanation.

this happens all the time. Yo have to give it a day or two and it should then reflect the actual amount. THey have to authorize a certain number, which they always do high, and then it gets corrected when they go back and enter in the tip amount and things like that.
