Bar none , best RAM in this situation for extreme overclocking

Thanks for taking a look...

Anyways

Still havent decided on a Mobo, so if you could reccomend one for this application that would be great. Im looking to keep the processor/cpu price under 400 dollars.

Ive been eyeing the P4 2.8 800 mhz fsb for a while now. Now my question is what would be the BEST ram setups (bar none) for this application. Keeging in mind that i want to OC this cpu to a minimum of 3.4 ghz. Would this cpu be the best for the situation?

I ask that because ive heard great things on the P4 2.4. The Geil PC 3500 looks good right now (looking to spend under 250 on a pair of 512s)

I REALLY appreciate all comments/recomendations.

I just built myself a P4 system with these parts:

Abit IS7 (~$100 at NewEgg.com)
Intel P4 2.6C 800FSB with HyperThreading (~$175 at newegg)
Kingston HyperX PC3700 1GB Kit (2x512MB) (~$220 at newegg)

Im not an overclocker, but people hit 3.25GHz on this setup (set the FSB to 250 which is 1000FSB quad pumped). I know if you have good enough ram and cooling you can hit 3.3GHz, so maybe 3.4 is possible! But if I were you I would stick to 3.25GHz, because that puts much less strain (past 3.25 gets to the point were its pushing some limits). I am going to see how high I can go, and I will post back when I get some time to check it out.

Awesome, thanks for the reply and specs.

Make sure to post back how high you get and maybe a CPU-Z Screen shot

Anyone use a P4 2.8 with the Geil PC 3500 (blue heatspreaders)

How do you determine what is optimal memory speed with the mobo?

thanks-

Hey man, they've already proven that using expensive RAM isn't very important for the P4s, as it is for the Athlons. Just use some decent RAM (at least PC2700), and run it at very tight timings-- like 2-2-2-5, if it will do it. With the P4 boards, you can set the BIOS to run the memory at either 4/5, 2/3, or 1/2 of the FSB, assuming my memory hasn't failed me. My Ultra PC3700 memory ran 2-2-2-5 at 240 (480 FSB) when I put it into my friend's P4. Anyway, according to the Intel guys that post on here, maximum Mhz is far better than running your memory at 1:1 at a lower processor speed. If you want to save a little money, I hear great things about the Buffalo Technology RAM that newegg sells here. Also, the Ultra 3700 that tigerdirect sells here is quite a good deal.

Why not spend the extra money that you were considering spending on RAM on a 3.0C? I'm pretty sure that you wouldn't regret it. Oh, and I keep hearing that the 2.6C's are higher overclockers than the 2.8C's. Has anyone heard any differently?

Thanks for the input, that may be a good alternative to getting expensive ram (the 3.0c)

That Geil is still getting my attention though, a little over 200 dollars for a gig of 3500 is nice. It comes stock with little blue heatsinks too.
