It seems there are more and more of these stories all the time and everyone is sitting back saying "it is how you raise the dog, mine would never do that" until they come home and find their 12 year old boy mauled to death. i agree with some of your assertations here except in this case the woman was not surprised that her dog killed.

That said, the bull terriers which are commonly referred to by the press as "pit bulls" have all sorts or health problems and are an inferior breed for any practical purpose. They frequently need c-sections to give birth and they tend to have all sorts of respiratory problems. Given all this, the only people who continue to raise those kinds of dogs tend to be those who think it's "neat" to have an aggressive, intimidating dog. So they teach the dog to be aggressive. The most sensible dog owners adopt mutts from the pound. Dog owners should be fully liable for how they raise their dogs, including facing first degree murder charges if their dog kills someone who isn't tresspassing or attacking someone.
