Banned for Being Against the War

Fellow AnandTechers,

I want to call your attention to the blatant disregard for free speech that is taking place in our forums. My username is Morph and recently I was banned for expressing my opposition to the war in Iraq. I have been a member of the Anandtech Forums for over 3 years and the other day, without a single word of warning, I was permanently banned from the forums. The following post is what prompted my ban (comment by Mod added later, of course):

Quote
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Senior administration sources tell NBC News that the U.S. dropped heavy bombs in a residential area after receiving ?extremely reliable? tip
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Residential area. Wonder how many civilians we killed.

We have had enough of your immature and trollish posts. You are gone forever.

Banning me for this is ridiculous and way out of line. I was simply expressing concern about dropping bombs in a residential area and wondering if and how many civilians were killed. A number of posters in the thread were concerned about the same thing. How is this "immature" or "trollish"? As for my previous posts, while I have spoken out freely against the war and tried to highlight what I felt were hypocrosies on the part of the Bush administration, I've always done so in a reasonable manner.

This banning is completely unjustified and was done purely out of spite by a moderator that does not agree with my anti-war opinions. But there can be no doubt that I have the right to express those opinions. Freedom of speech is what this country is all about. If we allow this to happen it sets a dangerous precedent, whereby a moderator can silence anyone that they do not like or that have political views that they disagree with. We should not allow this type of censorship on these forums. I hope you will all let our moderators know that this is UNNACCEPTABLE.

As for me, I hope to get unbanned, but even if I do, I don't know if I want to participate in a forum where I am always afraid to express my opinions from fear of being banned at any time, without warning, by overzealous moderators.

NOTE: THIS POST WILL BE REMOVED AS SOON AS A MOD SEES IT. NICE CENSORSHIP, MODERATORS.

It's been seen and will be discussed
Do not open another account here in the
meantime.

bye-bye. you are not missed.

Edit: Freedom of speech only means that the government cannot punish you for your voice on any issue. It doesn't mean that everyone else can't punish you.

this is like that post awhile back about the guy getting arrested for wearing a t-shirt. Thats what the orginal post said, came to find out, he was tresspassing or something. People always want to complain about how unfairly treated they are, then when you look closer, you find out the real reason. Kind of pathetic...

edit this: pathetic part is, you will always believe you got banned b/c of your 'position' on the war, yet nothing could be further from the truth....

You deserved the ban, that reply you made was troll bait, nothing more. Posting such drivel is just meant to inflame, which is why you're called a troll.

That is correct, these are not government forums, they are private forums...

I do not think the Mods banned you for being anti-war, plenty of people here are anti-war, but they are not trollish about it.

dude...no one ever said this forum is a democracy...its their site, they can do as they wish. You still have the option to legally go make a sign on a bedsheet and protest the evil treatment of the atot forum on the side of a busy freeway.

Well to be fair there are trolls on both sides that have not been banned. I think the general majority of people get tired of trolls. You were not banned for your stance, but rather your attitude displayed toward those on the other side and trying to start flamewars. We all have done it, but when it starts appearing in every post(yours of the past few weeks) it is a vacation. You probably destroyed all hopes of getting unbanned by creating a new name, but it depends on the mod.

I really hate to see anyone perma-banned unless they truly deserve it. They are far more deserving trolls than you, but sometimes people get taken advantage of.

Please Go away.
I've seen your posts. And you're not just against the war. You're insensitive, rude, and downright uncaring. Your reply about PFC Lynch (something along the lines of "Gee, she was slapped") made me want to jump through the computer and pack your sorry but up and send you to S.E.R.E training, and see what you say then.

Besides that. HELLO Anand pays for the servers. And the Hosting. There is no free speech. There's speech along the guidelines of Anand's rules. Respect them, and the mods. Period.

So bye again. And good riddance.

This latest post was simply the straw that broke the camel's back Morph. You are a troll. You post inflamatory comments to upset people. IMHO you deserve what you got.

You know, call me a troll if you want, but no one should be banned permanently without even being given a warning first. That is just crazy. Go ahead and side with the nazi moderator, just be careful what you say on these boards because it may happen to you one day.

It has happened to some of us before. Most of the time we did NOT get a warning. We KNEW ahead of time before we posted something that it could lead to a vacation or permanent banning. You are doing what liberals do best. WHINE!

Get over it. PM the mods, say you were sorry for registering a new name and ask permission to come back in a few weeks. Going your route only assures you of a permanent ban. Oh I forgot rational thinking is not allowed by your kind.
