That was painful. If this is what the web is like without Off Topic, I simply cannot go on, no matter how bad it may get around here.

I went to this place they called 'outside'. It was a strange land, and I'm not sure I would want to visit again.

What's amazing is AnandTech running VBulletin 3 when VBulletin 4 was released in 2009.

Like I said elsewhere... these forums have been on autopilot for a long time. Absolutely the minimum amount of work that is humanly possible goes into keeping them running.

That is a good fit for a forum where so many posters put in the minimum amount of thought humanly possible before posting. 😛

The problem is you have a tech forum, filled with technology minded users, being ran by people who probably couldn't even hook up a new mouse. Anyone remember what happened when someone tried to help out and point out the CSS exploit that could have taken the forum down?

Why even pretend this is a tech site anymore? Its not. Its a social media site that is stocked with people who have an agenda. The tech forums are filled with plants and fanboys, the social forums are filled with mentally challenged people and whack jobs. Its just sad. I only keep coming here because I hope that it will go back to what it was.

I mean...FFS: 2,325 Alexa rank? Don't they see any collation between the "change in culture", the nut job users and the tanking ranking?

No...probably not. Lets just put up more ads, hijack every link posted and ban anyone who dares point these things out.

What would be the reason with sticking with the 3.x series?
The migration process doesn't look that complex.

You take that back!

I have said that for a while.

when the forum allowed a nivida plant get people banned i knew something was wrong. Then they made him him a mod in that forum.

anandtech is the last place i read when i wanted to upgrade. Sure there are members i trust when it comes to advice. but the main webpage? oh hell no.

i have always been amazed how a "tech" forum could have so much downtime and problems. the people in charge aren't idiots and it is not lacking money? so what's the problem?

though it is still better then toms or a good portion of the tech sites.

That's not really even the point (although the irony is difficult to overlook). I'm a member of a cooking forum elsewhere where the webmaster keeps VB up to date, patches in custom code, keeps everything running smoothly.

Purch (the owner of AT) reminds me of a small-time magazine publisher we have here in town. They publish home decorating journals, sewing magazines, gardening guides, crap like that. None of them have much of a circulation, but all put together, it adds up. And they're all garbage (a friend of mine does graphic layout for several of them). Minimal manpower and effort put into them, full of errors, missing pages, the works. But they make somebody some money, and that's all it's about.

Erm, this doesn't all fall on Purch's lap. Yes, they are the new owners, but, what rudeguy mentioned is before Purch's time.
So far, Purch has eliminated the forum downtime that was every weekend, and now, they upgraded the forum software, albeit not the newest version of vbulletin available.

This forum isn't really tech oriented anymore, it has crossed into the murky waters of social "chat" and some toxic users (& sections of the forums) have poisoned the water and this has leached into the areas of this forum that are tech oriented, and it isn't a pretty picture.

Does anyone else randomly have to sign back into the forums? I understand different computers/devices, but this is the fourth time on this VM with this browser.

Check remember me when you're logging in. Once checked I've never had to login on the forums.
