Look at this list for the lulz, not sure if it's legit.

Considered dangerous because it contains "sick words from the mouths of demon-possessed people."
Challenged by Cumberland Valley High School, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania,
1982.

A few of the books on there I've read in school, like The Grapes of Wrath, Lord of The Flies, 1984, Of Mice And Men, and To Kill a Mockingbird.

It's interesting that the vast majority of these banned books also appear on numerous "best of" lists of literature. Could it be that art which pushes boundaries and is a bit controversial is also the best art? :hmm:

Anyways, I agree. The reasons are laughable at best, as are the people that protest these great novels. If anything, we should be encouraging young people to read these books to expand their awareness and stimulate their minds.

Fuck censorship.

Silly closed-minded people...banning books because you don't agree with the content.

I can see keeping books with sexual content off of school reading lists, although Johnny and Jimmy have probably already downloaded tons of porn...but not everyone believes that their kids are ready to deal with the sexual issues often covered in books.

IMO, Shakespeare should be banned from all school curriculum. Horrible things to have to read...

I blame the states of Tennessee, Kansas, and Texas; Fred Phelps, and FelixDeKat.

lol 15 of those on the list in the 1st link we HAD to read for English class in high school

we always had posters in our hallways in High School listing the banned books, and challenging the students to read as many as they could. heh.

Its true. Every year in middle school and high school there were parents that raised hell about a few books that were required. My school district never did anything, but others nearby rolled over for the parents and let them do whatever

rofl, 1984 is on there for "Objections to pro- Communist material and explicit sexual matter." Whoever motioned for that obviously didn't understand it. The whole thing was against communism!

The 1st time i ever heard of Harry Potter was because some a school a few towns away from me was all up in arms about it and ended up banning it

I've worked as a librarian in a public library, middle school library and an elementary school library. Most of those books on that list were "banned" 30-40 years ago from a backwards thinking library or school in small town, USA. There is always someone who can find a book they think it objectionable and needs to be pulled to protect the children.

Harry Potter came out when I was at the elementary school and I'd regularly hear it from parents who objected to the book without even reading it. Shit like "Full of magic and against God's laws!" was at the top of the listed complaints.

the type of people that support censorship are generally illiterate. It often goes without saying that they've never read the books.

I mean--they do believe such material is improper, right? As they certainly believe that their minds are too weak to withstand such offensive material, lest it change their core belief structure, of course they would avoid reading such evil devil business.

Can't believe A Wrinkle in time is on there, some kids get taken on an adventure through space by witches and defeat a psychic mind controlling brain by hugging it.

I read it in like grade 3 so I'm sure that leaves out some detail.

Was probably banned because it has "good" witches, which is un-Christian and therefore dangerous to young minds.

Heh yeah, except To Kill a Mockingbird. Our english teacher assigned it during spring break sophomore year. The day back she wanted to talk about it and it turned out one person out of 30 people read it. She was fuckin' pissed.

When I said I read those books, what I really meant was those are the books that were assigned to me... :hmm:

Did you strike them with your hammer? If I was a paladin, that's what I would do.
