I took out one of those retail store cards/loans almost 2 years ago for purchase of a nice big fluffy bed. It was 2 years no interest, and it's been ~20 months or so, so almost getting paid off. I recently received a bill saying "your payment is late, please pay last payment + this payment + $28". I have paid every bill as soon as I get it, not just on time, but early, as soon as I get it. I swear I did not receive a bill for the one last month, it honestly was not received by me or I would've paid it. Am I crazy in thinking that I should deserve a little notice/leeway/etc in expecting some courtesy? I just called the place and they said blah blah blah, past the grace period, pay up. I'm sure I will get some flames about "you should expect it when it comes, auto-debit, etc etc" but honestly, I've been a good customer, but I won't be dealing with this firm ever again, all over $28.

You should have kept track of whether you had paid that month's bill or not and called in if they haven't mailed the letter yet.

Lost mail doesn't excuse a missed payment. I'm sure the bank has heard that many times in the past, and most of the time it is a lie.

Keep track of your own payments

Many times companies will not send you anything in the mail for this exact reason.

& some places when you break the contract because you failed to pay as a result of them not sending you the letter in the mail.. the fine print will make a new contract for you which will destroy you.

not only are you gonna get hit with the late fee, but I'll bet that being late cancels the no-interest part of the loan.

I had a similar situation with my electric bill this month. I got the new bill for the month in and it said my previous payment had not been received, was late, blah blah. I called the company up 5 minutes later, explained that I had not received anything, and asked how they would like me to pay it. They said just include a check for the full amount and it would be fine.

Ive had friends that had their loan "sold" to another company which did not let them know in time so they got charged up the rear because they made the payment to the wrong place.

Yes. Did you ever read the contract which clearly stated what happens if a payment is ever late? You made a late payment, I don't understand what the fuss is about?

Also chances are you're dealing with a finance company which IMHO is worse than a bank due to their high interest rates, etc.

CU > Bank > Finance Company
