When I deposit checks do I need to put my account number on the check? It's already on my deposit slip.

On the back of your check, for extra protection, if you know that you will not be endorsing the check to anyone else, it's safe to put "For Deposit Only" then your account # - this way the endorsement will prevent the check from being cashed into any other account. It's not necessary though,

i only put my acct. number on a check if i cash it and don't deposit it.

So NO, it's probably not required.

Nope. Some banks will require you to endorse it, but not even all do that.
Endorsements are required for any check to be cashed. Federal banking rules stipulate such.

If you don't put your acct number on the back of the check there's not much stopping someone from endorsing their signature and depositing it into their account instead of yours.

Cashed, absolutely, the OP is talking about deposits. It isn't necessary if the person that the check is made out to matches the name on the acct it's being deposited into.

i never used to, but then i noticed when i go to the tellers, they usually write in after i give it to them. so, to save them the hassle and to minimize a whole half second longer i have to spend at the bank, i just write it on there. endorse it when i get to the bank and filling out the deposit slip.

what i dont get, is why does everyone blow by the deposit slip counter, just so they could fill it out at the teller? it holds up the line for us who take the time to fill out the slip beforehand. the table is empty, c'mon people! my time spent at the teller deposting is less than 30 seconds. hand over slip and check, print out new balance receipt, 'good day', and im gone. oh well, its not really a pet peeve anymore, direct deposit and signs informing people 'have your deposit slip ready and filled out' have taken care of that for me. :D

They fill out the stupid envelope. I swear it would be such a service to the customers if they would just make envelopes with one peice of information on them: "Insert this end first".

It's usually not required but to cover your ass it's a good idea.

It's not that difficult to endorse (sign) a check and write your account number next to it.

A check must be endorsed as made payable.

A teller is just as capable of endorsement as I am.

Your bank tellers sign your checks for you?

No, but the teller can use discretion. If the names match up on the check and on the acct, I don't have to sign my name to the check.

Hmm I don't know about that, I think it is a regulation that you need to endorse it.
---->looking for that procedure right now, *I'm not a teller* I play with make believe money.

It wouldn't be if I carried a pen with me or asshats didn't continually steal the cheap-ass pen. Some newer ATMs (in banks) around here don't even have pens, they just don't bother anymore. A couple of times I wanted to deposit but didn't have a pen on me; in that case, I just stick the cheque in an envelope without writing anything on it; hasn't caused a problem so far.

There are about 20 tellers I could call right now if I really wanted to. I happen to work in a bank so I know everyone that works there.

Me <- works at bank - operations processing

We stamp unendorsed checks that are deposited. But it's a PITA since we process eleventy billion checks every day (or at least it feels that way). We undoubtedly miss a few every day. The stamp says something along the lines of, "Guaranteed Endorsement to be deposited into the named account" or something like that (I'm tired, don't really remember right now).

We return checks all the time that are unendorsed or endorsed improperly that other Banks send to us. Why take the risk that your check will be returned unpaid? It's your money, going into your account. You worked hard for it. Be HAPPY, and sign the darn thing! It doesn't take that long, and if you've got a bunch every day, get a rubber stamp and do it.

Also, checks are paper. They can get separated from deposit slips. If your account number is not on the check, you'd better hope that we can figure out who the heck is supposed to get the money, or you're SOL until we track it down. God help you if your name is "John Smith" 'cuz there's about 50 guys with that name with accounts here.

Do yourself a favor, and sign and write your account number on the checks!
