so I went to my bank, Bank of Amerika, and plopped my bag of change onto the counter and asked if they can deposit this into my savings account, and they told me to go to safeway across the street and use the god damn coinstar machine and get it changed to some greenbacks first.

so i did, and now i don't understand why they made me do that, I thought one of the jobs of banks was to give change and stuff

Last time we took some coins to BoA, they said that they only took coins in rolls.

I wouldn't want to be the person behind you wanting to make a simple check deposit while I wait an hour for the teller to count your coins...

Banks used to have coin counting machines and used to not charge customers to count coins. Now they just suck.

My bank has one of the super fast coin counters and you can use it for free. It's nice to use a small local bank that still understands the meaning of customer service.

I have never been to a bank that took coins that were not already rolled. I think this has pretty much been standard policy at most banks for decades. Why should they sit there and count out thousands of coins for you? They were correct in sending you to the Coinstar machine across the street.

None of my banks have. Always have to bring in rolls if you want them to deposit it.

i have a bag of coins on my side right now.

this time I think i'll use them to actually buy stuff. I'll use a few at time when i buy food, so if a food costs $5 I'll pay $4 in bills and $1 in change.

ok.

It seems to be standard in Iowa and Nebraska for them to take change. Dunno about any other states. Even the banks inside grocery stores and such usually take it.

i didn't remember it correctly, i corrected it a few posts up. they gave me coin rolls, not directed me to the coinstar machine. they were free.

That's a shame because the bank just lost out on some money due to Coinstar's raping.

Consider yourself lucky. I have always had to buy my own rolls.

And then you just gave them away to the bank?

Count out thousands of coins? They should have a machine, like most banks. It only takes a few minutes at most to count even large amounts of coins. Coinstar completely rips you off.

Yea, every bank I've used have machines that count coins... but with banks getting bigger, customer service isn't there anymore. However, I still use small banks so.. yea.. they still have good customer service :) they count my change (not by hand.. but by using machines that take only a few minutes..)

If you have a Commerce Bank near you, they have coin-counting machines for anyone to use. Gives you a receipt you take to the teller.

Duct tape your coins to a cinder block and throw it through the banks front window. Make sure to glue a deposit slip to the block.

i dunno, can they refuse to take it outright? Its legal tender.

That said, I know you have to roll it for BOA down here in FL...

Same here. My state employee's credit union has such a machine at at least one of its local branches. I used it a few months ago. It kicked ass. Just dumped all of my coins in there, it prints out a receipt, then I could deposit it right into my account. No fees.
