Bank Error

I dropped by today to get a print-out for my taxes, as I had a lot of money sitting in my account earning interest during the last year. I called to check my balances a few minutes ago, and the amount of money in my checking account has spiked by 20%!

I wonder if someone deposited a large cheque after I got my print-out, and the teller's computer was still set to my account or something. Can't even call them to correct it right now, due to the hour.

Do you have online access to your account? Maybe that would show the transaction. Possible IRS refund?

I once deposited a $100 check, when i got my next bank statement the bank had given me $10,000 credit. I was tempted to make a withdrawal and take a vacation, but i went to the bank and made things right. A few years later I had not made any deposits for a few months and there was a $20,000 credit to my account, again I alerted the bank.

I do, and it just shows a deposit, not the time or origin. It is not an IRS refund, as I haven't filed yet.

Ah, well. It was just a possible explanation. Let us know what it turns out to be.

Psst... tick, tock on that IRS thing. :)

I would have put it into a CD until they found the error. Then again I already have 2 embezzlement convictions...

Yeah, I just got the last piece of paperwork I needed from my Credit Union yesterday. That is what had me wondering if my account was still called up on their system, and perhaps someone behind me deposited a cheque. Doesn't explain the lack of a time stamp or place of deposit in my online account data, though.

Just got off of the phone with my Credit Union. Nothing popped up immediately when they looked into it. They said the deposit was made via cheque, and I am fairly certain I didn't make any deposits to my account that day. I cannot say for certain though, as after I go for an extended period without sleep, I may not recall every action I have taken. I don't know where I would have gotten a cheque in that amount from, though.

They are going to send out a reprint of the paperwork and such to me, though there was no suggestion on their part that the money is anything other than mine. I am starting to wonder if it was an older cheque I deposited sometime in the past, and for some reason the funds only now showed up.

I was hoping they were going to send me a copy of the cheque I supposedly deposited. Instead, they sent me a print out of the same information I am able to view online, which tells me nothing. They sure don't seem too worried about finding out where the mystery money in my account came from.

You're dealing with a bureaucracy, as such, there is no problem until the bank manager says there is and a paper trail exists.

I thought there would be a paper trail, but apparently not. It does not instill confidence in me to think this is what would happen if one of my cheques somehow got deposited to the wrong account.

Just go ahead and cash it all out. IF they ever catch their error, explain that you DID tell them once, but the second time, you just couldn't ignore...it was a sign from Gawd that you were supposed to buy that new whatchamacalit...and that it was THEIR fault...One little mistake you can overlook and forgive, but two? No fucking way. it's a sign I'm tellin ya...a sign!
