So payroll overpaid me by a couple hundred bucks. It's not likely to be an error they find, since Monday was a holiday last week and I only get paid for days worked. As such, the check is for an amount in line with what I make in a normal 5 day week, and wouldn't stand out on a spreadsheet as an obvious error. I feel mixed about reporting it, and I could sure as hell use the money.

Curious, what would you do?

EDIT: it was correctly applied holiday pay since I've now been here over 6 months. see post below.

most payrolls are a week to 2 weeks behind... next check will be less because of the holiday.

I'd tell them about it because I'm not a thief.

Something similar happened when I started my job here. They pay monthly, and the day I started happened to be pay day. They desposited my monthly wage into my bank account on the first day of employement. ($5000 or so) I told my boss and they took the money back out a few days later. Would it have been nice to keep? Sure. But it wasn't my money.

Fixed.

Yup.

And then you'll be a couple hundred short one month instead of having a couple hundred extra this month.

I wouldn't steal. But then again, I wouldn't list out my rig in my sig either.

I got tired of typing it out when asking for support. At least it's only 2 horizontal lines and not 9.

So passively receiving money and not speaking up is stealing. And actively downloading mp3's and other on p2p is sharing. Got it. (j/k, not a real argument)

Turns out they paid me for the holiday on purpose. So, is it stealing to accept money you thought wasn't yours but actually was? You can't be charged with something you thought was a crime but wasn't (e.g. 20 yr old thinks girl he has sex with is 14, but she's actually 18 = no crime.)

So, technically I'm not a thief, I'm just a scumbag ;)

They will find it and when they do they will come and get it. You might as well gain some face by bringing it to their attention.

Yes, if they caught it they would.
Give it back now, or they will take it back later (unannounced of course).

Eventually they will. I was underpaid for 8 full months last year. I eventually got a check for the 8 month's of pay they owed me.
Mine was an odd situation since I received a raise, but my genius HR department had my W2 all messed up (listed me as single, when I was in fact married).
Oh, and it took them 5 years to update my address correctly.

The 2 HR people are bright ones.

What's funny is the IRS puts the onus on the company to make sure the W2's are accurate. My company knew I was married, so it was their duty to change my W2 (ask me to complete a new one).

I suppose all companies are different, a company i used to do part time work for used to underpay me every week, for about 2 months, and every week i filled out a wage query, and every week i didnt hear back and had to chase people up. eventually i got it back but if i didnt complain everyweek i doubt i would have got back 1 penny of it.

It does depend. I once got a check for a few hundred dollars from a place where I hadn't worked for years, apparently they'd been withholding too much for social security? I don't recall, but it was a nice surprise. I was a little surprised they found me, considering I'd moved around quite a bit since then.
