I really liked the new M3, I liked some of his designs, but I don't like how he incorporated them into every car that he touched.

frankly, i think the 7 series of his era were the only vehicles i really didn't like. And maybe the X3.

I'm sorry, as much as I like BMWs, I dont know this guy or why he is infamous with the BMW crowd. History lesson?

current Head of Design... introduced the world to Flame Surfacing, and many other currently used techniques to make the sheetmetal of cars more fluid and dynamic looking.

Well, here is my review of his designs :

1-series : Ugh.
3-series sedan : not terrible, but has some unappealing aspects
3-series coupe : pretty sweet
5-series : I actually liked this more than most people, but still prefer E39
6-series : Seems a little ungainly, I don't mind it but am not crazy about it
7-series : Meh on the looks, but it's been tweaked/improved from the premiere of the current style
Z4 : I wasn't a fan of the Z3 either, didn't look proportionally correct to me, Z4 is more of the same with a bit more pop
X3 : Yuck
X5 : Decent
X6 : PUKE

I feel sad since I loved his designs. Guess that's why I am E90 owner.

I guess he's now free to apologize for the fugly Z4 with its sad beaver face.
His most embarrassing work.

Probably quit because he ran out of ideas.

I didn't mind his design-era much but I have to ask why everyone thinks he's behind every idea. He could be the head honcho as far as that goes but if you watch any of the BMW videos on the design of a series, he is never mentioned, but the real designers are... speaking in the videos. Anyway, I think when people say the previous generation was "timeless" and now "butchered" - that's as much opinion as anything else.. I prefer the modern look.

real story on his departure

EDIT>
who designed what

Who cares what his designs look like, WTF is going on with his hair? That's in Blago territory.

The only BMW I think really looks nice right now is the 3 coupe, and that's only if I pretend it doesn't look like a 'vert with a hardtop bolted onto it.

I like the E92, but everything else he did was rubbish. Good fucking riddance, and let's hope the new guy has some actual talent.

I don't know if this is good news or bad, since his replacement is Adrian van Hooydonk, who actually was the head designer for the E65 7'er (Bangle just supervised)

head designer for each model:

E36/7 (Z3 Coupe): Chris Bangle (DesignworksUSA) - First Project

E46: Chris Bangle/Erik Goplen (DesignworksUSA)

E52(Z8): Henrik Fisker (DesignworksUSA)

E53 X5: Chris Chapman/Chris Bangle (DesignworksUSA)

E60: David Arcangeli (DesignworksUSA)

E63: Adrian Van Hooydonk (DesignworksUSA)

E65: Adrian Van Hooydonk (DesignworksUSA)

E70 (X5): Pierre Leclercq (DesignworksUSA)

E71(X6): Pierre Leclercq (DesignworksUSA)

E82 / 87 / 88 (1 Series): Kevin Rice (DesignworksUSA)

E83 (X3): Geoff Velasco (DesignworksUSA)

E85 (Z4): Anders Warming (DesignworksUSA)

E90: Joji Nagashima (Munich)

F01/F02 (7 Series): Karim Antoine Habib (Munich)

When movie studios start replacing your cars with your competitors, you know it's time you gotta to go.

Agreed...the others I either like or have grown on me significantly. I really like the new 3-Series Coupe and M3...which I know he didn't directly design...but his influence is certainly there.

One thing I think BMW has lagged behind the competition a good bit is in interior design. In my opinion the CTS, A4, and C class all trump the 3 series when it comes to interior look, feel, and overall fit/finish.

I think Chris Bangle gets a lot of unnecessary hate by a bunch of toolboxes, or people seeking to defaecate on anybody. Some of his designs were unappealing, but I LOVE the new M3.

I also love the new Z4. They better put a V8 in the M version.
