bandwith useage question

operating system

windows 7 64 bit
dlink 655 router
dlink modem
at&t service provider dsl
nothing wireless , even wireless is shut off in the router

recently been notified by at&t i have exceeded my cap useage and that it began in january. my pattern of useage hasnt changed in years so i am wondering if somehow they are not reading my useage correctly or someone has done something to the line ? i dont know what may have happened but they are suppose to be out here tomorrow to see what the problem is.

they state i download 25 gb of data a day . i do have one machine that does things for me useing bandwith and according to my bandwith meter its less than 1 mbps download and 145 kbps upload . i dont see that as being to much downloading ? i have been doing this for years with the same speed yet i got a bill for 123 dollars when normaly its only 48 dollars.

i have anti virus on this machine and another and dont see anything that shouldnt be installed to cause this problem.

if anyone has suggestions i would be gratefull as i cant afford to be paying this much per month

Honestly, the only thing you can do is either use less bandwidth, or switch to Time Warner or whatever cable provider you have in the area, IF they don't have caps. As soon as At&t announced the caps, I switched from crappy 6mbps DSL through them to 50 megabit download / 5 megabit upload through Time Warner and couldn't be happier.

Ultimately, with netflix streaming, etc. a lot of people use over a couple hundred GB per month of bandwidth, and this is At&t's way of getting more money out of them.

only option i have outside of at&t is going to sonic and they would use at&t line to connect me.

Try to use this free Util.

Maybe you will find out what the story is.

😎

thank you

wondering if its perhaps the at&t email account sending out something thus they see it as my bandwith useage? grasping at straws as i just went through another 50GB of data somehow .

i use du meter to monitor bandwith useage , have had it for years it reads 1.0 mbps download / 169 kbps upload on the one machine. thats all the time 24/7 for years this way . this machine i am typing on it varies depending on what i am doing with it but never anything for long periods

seems every two days i download / upload another 50 gb of data thus exceeding it again , already way past my useage cap again for this next billing cycle.

Is the 1mpbs down/169kbps up that you mentioned a constant rate all day? If so, that's your problem since that would mean you are downloading about 10.8 GB and uploading about 1.8 every day. That's a total of close to 380 GB total per month just for that one machine. And that's before you add in any other browsing/downloading/movie streaming/etc. that you do on your other machines.

yes its pretty constant seldom less so i need another provider as this one is seriously hurting me now. i never had problems with them till last month and it hasnt been any different

What program are you running. Torrenting? Direct downloads? Streaming? I'm guessing that your torrenting and all the ISP's are really cracking down on that, especially the illegal side.

hosting several avatars for a game , have been doing this for years. its never cost anything but use of a computer to help friends. well now its not helping its hurting

If you are referring to sonic.net DSL, then they are really good from what I have read. I assume you are in the bay area since that's their primary area. Sonic.net does not have caps
http://corp.sonic.net/ceo/2011/03/23/drilling-through-the-caps/

Their ceo used to post on forums/answer questions I think on slickdeals.net
They were also chosen by google to deploy 1gbps fiber to a test neighborhood.

Last, if you have dsl available, then you should have cable available too. Comcast, time warner, or another.

comcast isnt close enough to me to use , they said they are a few blocks away . i have tried for many years with them for service .

will speak to sonic today to start switching to them. they will have to use at&t lines to do it. i'm in central california.

at&t came and left and tech said he had no way to check my useage here , that they check useage by user id . what that means is if someone finds out my user id and password they could use that to log in and then use my account to download with and i would be the one paying the bill. according to them they have no way of knowing if someone else is doing this. i dont understand how they cant verify this themselves by checking to see if there is more than one person logged in useing that id by checking ip address. really doesnt make any sense to me

what has been done is changing the password and network password as well. but unless the other person if there is another person doesnt restart thier modem they will stay useing my account till it does.

so i dont know if this is a bunch of lies or truths or half way truths. tired and upset over all of this

That is very strange. For the ISP I work for we have a tool where people can log into their primary account and it shows details on data usage for the month. Does ATT&T offer anything like that which you could use?

Fardringle brought up a good point. Is the program you’re running showing that you’re constantly using 1mbs per minute, hour, etc. Or is it just monitoring your speed and that’s what you’re averaging? If it’s the latter then that wouldn’t be a problem.
Truthfully I doubt that anyone has hacked your account though it is possible but rather rare for stuff like that to happen. ISPs are usually good at tracking when something is going on with bandwidth since I had a similar problem at one point.

Honestly instead of monitoring bandwidth on one PC I would suggest seeing if ATT&T has a way for you yourself to personally check the bandwidth usage or if you’re using a router then check the bandwidth usage through the router to see how much bandwidth it shows being used up. Most routers these days can monitor that and even be set up cap/cut off internet at a certain amount.

If you can check/monitor bandwidth usage either of those ways and they show you’re indeed using up a lot of bandwidth I would suggest to just trying shutting down one PC for a day and then the other PC and see if that makes a difference. Least since I assume you’re using a router. If hosting those Avatars isn’t eating up that much bandwidth (which I assume it’s not) then only other thing I could think is that something is running in the background eating up bandwidth like crazy. Not sure what though since I assume that hosting those Avatars for that game doesn’t use up that much and you said you’re not running a torrent of anything.

But yeah I think it would be preferable to check bandwidth usage another way if possible. Very least if you have two computers or only one computer direct to your modem I would suggest trying to open your task manager and kill anything which connecting to the net and using bandwidth and see if that affects your usage for the day. I’m wondering if something could be eating up bandwidth like a virus or something but I’ll admit that’s not typical behavior for malware a lot of the time.

one thing i forgot to mention is when i checked the email account they gave to me they had sent me a email stating someone was phishing that email address . and i did have a very weak password as i didnt think anyone would be able to log in to my dsl account and use the account to access internet to do as they wish.

i also did check thier website for useage and it clearly shows i am useing alot of bandwith according to them.

so i dont know at this point if i am doing this or something else.

Are you using a router and can you use it to check your bandwidth usage? If so that would be a pretty quick way to say for sure or not if your connection is the one that’s eating up so much bandwidth. Only other thing I would really imagine trying is to just shut down the PC for a day or kill all internet applications on it and see if large amounts of bandwidth keeps getting eaten up or not. Either someone is using your connection or something on your PC is eating up a ton bandwidth. Because truthfully stuff like Netflix, online gaming, etc is not going to be using up nearly that much bandwidth unless you were doing huge amounts for hours on end.

during time tech was here we shut everything off to confirm if i had a virus to see if my meters showed any useage . if the lights on router would continue blinking etc nothing like that showed.

if it comes down to it i could shut down what i am doing for a few days but prefer not to do that.

dont know how to set up the router to show bandwith useage , its a dlink 655 router that i have had for years. i have always trusted the software i use to monitor useage and its set to show me if use more than 75 gb in a month or so i thought as it hasnt sent me any warning so far that my useage has exceeded that setting

Yup, this will do it. That's a 'small' amount of bandwidth, but running it constant, it add's up QUICK. ISP are definitely cracking down, especially on 'servers' at home. I know my ISP normally doesnt watch bandwidth usage until someone in the area starts complaining of slow speeds. All could be well for years, until someone new moves into the area, and also starts using a lot of bandwidth, or someone elses usage patterns change, and suddenly other people start complaining about slow speeds.

Have you considered switching to an ATT business plan with more bandwidth (if available)?
Chances are, you're going to need to pay more money, or use less data.

if it turns out that my useage is the problem then i will be contacting sonic to see if they will take me . thats last resort i have at this time to resolve this mess.

It takes few minutes to find our what generate Bandwidth.

After few days it is not clear what is the case on your system.

If there is No Bandwidth use that can be found you have to take it stronger with ATT keep posting here is Fun and your are welcome to do it, but that you have to realize that it is Not going to solve the problem.

BTW posting the Devices on your Network and they way it connecting would be nice.

There are many users that are not aware (as an example) that their Wireless part of the network generate traffic by the users that are using their insecure Wireless.
