bandwidth tool?

Anybody know of a tool that will give me a measurement of available network bandwidth? I need to compare several 'pipes' to see which can carry more data.

The only way to accurately gauge effective bandwidth from the outside is by testing it. The usual way would be using a low-overhead protocol like FTP to transfer a large file from one end to the other, although other sorts of measurements are possible...
