For some reason the mods decided to lock this when I tried posting it before and left NO explaination, so I am going to try this again. If this is inappropriate the least you could do is say why....geez

I am going to be moving in with a friend soon and we were planning on having a network and dsl for our computers setup. Because of our downloading habits and what not we dont wanna steal each others bandwidth, so we were wondering if there was some sort of software setup to say limit the amount of bandwidth each computer uses? Maybe even a feature that will allow a user to go over that amount if it isnt in use by the other?

Anyone here know of anything like that? Or even if theres a feature like this built into a specific router?

Thanks!
eric

You are asking about software, so follow the yellow brick road to the software forum. If this thread was in the NW'ing forum I might be a little more lenient and let it remain open.

The mods probably locked it because your question belongs in the software section. Hope you find a solution :)

To do this you'll need a layer 3 switch, which does traffic shaping. They aren't cheap :). I'm unaware of any software that does this well.

Sorry I was unsure on where to post this due to it possibly being a hardware issue or software and due to the fact that general gets more activity. If they were to lock threads that would be more appropriate in other forums then that would eliminate half of the threads in general. But ANYWAY....

Thanks for the quick replies, unless someone knows of a cheap solution to this it looks like we are going to be fighting over our bandwidth :(

thanks!
