Bandwidth Monitors

Do any of you guys know of a free software bandwidth monitor that'll work with a linkys BEFSR41 router? I'm currently serving a few computers in my apt (yes i'm the designated sysadmin for our dsl service) and I suspect that sometimes users hog bandwidth either with irresponsible use of sharing software or other software. Thanks!

Due to the nature of the built-in switch, there's no way to monitor the bandwidth used on all 4 ports (unless such a function is already included in the router). If you're connected to port 1, you can't see any traffic from someone connected to port 2.

You can get around this by getting a regular hub and connecting you and all your users to it. That way, you can intercept all the traffic using software like ItCan or Ntop

hm...i've heard of programs that will work with routers...but i did a quick search and they all cost money...like major money $100+. I presume it's geared more towards a company.

Are there any other cheaper routes than those sofware? You're suggestion of using hubs (while a good one) won't really work since there's 12+ computers and there would be a lot of collisions if I didn't use switches.

you cant watch packets that dont come near you. the only way to monitor it is to use a hub, or throw 3 or so 4 port nics in a machine and make it a router, and use software to monitor bandwidth usage.

but with how it is currently set up, you simply *cant* monitor it.
