Bandwidth and DC rant

For DC projects like Seti to work, the project needs to have reliable, dedicated bandwidth. The recent problems at Berkeley only emphasize this point. I understand that the project is under-funded, but it is extremely frustrating to be able to work on a DC project like Seti and not be able to continue because of probs with bandwidth. The PC's I've assimilated @ work all connect to the Net via crappy dial-up while internally we run at Gigabit speeds. I am forced to connect at home via dial-up as well until Comcast gets off thier a@@ and hooks up the cable modem service they have been promising for over a year. Arrghhh. Thanks for letting me vent.

BTW, Berkeley is responding well this morning. Have DL a batch of WU's and am crunching away.

I feel your pain.

It actually costs anyone quite a lot of money to crack for SETI. Dial-up costs are a major part of this... 🙁 We only have dial-up here at work too, so I can understand the frustration.

The bottom line is, if Berkeley's servers are down or inaccessible, then no-one gets any WUs, and SETI does not recieve any results. Its therefore in their interests to see that the servers stay up! 😉

Its frustraiting to suffer server outages because everyone else who cracks for SETI with a passion incurrs costs willingly, just to be able to crack that much faster. 🙁

Oh well, as I say, if they want the units cracked, they need to send them out.... 🙂

Heheh, just wait till one of us hits paydirt, then watch the funding for better bandwidth come pouring in. 😉

Course that ever happen, the govt would take it over and try and shut us out 🙁

There are DC projects where you don't have to download any work, and can upload results at your convenience. 😉

Berkeley seems to be working fine right now, but it is not Noon there yet, so the slackers are still sleeping rather than downloading pr0n.

Someone close napster's along with other's downloading/uploading ports 🙂

Well guys, that's why you have to cache enough WU's for several days work.

It's going on three years of seti for me now, and I have only had major trouble with Berkley a couple times.

I cache 18 units on each machine, which is about 4.5 days work. If the problem goes on for more than that time period I know I can get WU's from one of the proxies.

If you just keep crunching and storing your results then you will eventually get them all uploaded and get credit and any work done will be examined by their servers.

Remember that even though their bandwidth may get capped they are still examining the data and preparing new WU's to be sent. The servers go on even when the bandwidth is bottlenecked. Keep crunching!! 😉
