are the DVD's in Dolby digital or dts? Because they were showing them on HBO again and they weren't in dolby digital (and I for one thought they certainly would be)

Thanks.

cc is for deaf people. subtitles are for people that speak another language.

Thanks.

The DVDs come with English DD 5.1, English DTS 5.1, English DD 2.0, Spanish DD 2.0, French DD 2.0 and a DD 2.0 commentary track

I believe the showings on HBO-HD are in DD 5.1

whenever i need text at bottom of screen, i've always gone to Subtitles menu and click on English.

Both your DVD player and TV shoud have the ability to enable CC. Pick which ever one works for you. It should be CC1. Remember that it will not appear suddenly. It takes a second or two to kick in. If it's not CC1, try the other settings.

Err WTF. I've watched the series twice, once on my home theater and another time on a dinky ass TV with too much bass. I had no trouble understanding anything said at any time, and I'm 20% deaf in my left ear.

Maybe you need better speakers?

in theory:p

well cc is encoded on the edge of a tv picture. you know.. the overscan. it gets decoded by the tv and is sorta ugly because it uses the tv font and ussually has a black background blocking picture.

subs are nicer, they are just a file with buncha bmps of letters that the dvd player superimposes ontop of the picture. so no icky background etc. plus, you can choose different subs. i think you can only have one cc since its encoded into the signal.

Also, make sure you pick the correct sound track on the DVD. If you don't have a centre channel speaker (like my dad's old surround system), then you won't get any of that sound (mostly speech). Try watching it in the DD 2.0 to see if that helps.

LMAO.

umm...i don't see anything wrong in that....i always watch my dvd's w/ english subs.......sometimes i miss a lot of dialogue...that's just me.....it's just way better to understand it that way...and that sucks that the dvd didn't come w/ english subs....i mean, vhs's come w/ cc's....

not if you have your sound system properly setup and calibrated. I have not had a problem hearing the center channel dialogue when the series originally aired on HBO HD in Dolby 5.1. I only watched a few episodes, but from what i'm hearing, it was a great series.

It's actually a movie adapted from a biography, and lots of details are omitted, especially some background information.
If you're interested, maybe you can start from the book first.

Wow, a sixteen year gap between replies. You would think that our forum software would be smart enough to show a warning before allowing a post like this.
