My roommate used to be in marching band.. (I'm 20.. out of high school now..) and he was talking about how difficult it was... the training involved etc... how physical the entire sport was. I remember in high school all the bank dorks would complain about how strenuous the whole thing was

Sport??? Sport?? I was like wtf dude that's not a sport...

argument ensues.....

WTF? When did BAND become a sport?? I know you have to... you know... stand around.. then walk around some.. then stand and blow air out of your lungs but wtf?

Well, being in a marching band IS pretty tough.. but a sport? No way

I just don't see how it can be THAT tough. I played football, and camp was pretty tough... but we didn't b!tch 1/2 as much as the people in band did about band camp/marching band

it just seems to me like they're trying to maybe.. make up for something? fsck I dunno... stupid...

Well being a former marching band member, he's probably single and lonely, so maybe he was trying to impress you with his 'm@d $killz' to get a little attention.

all the sex you have in band certainly could be a sport

If by sex you mean sticking your dick in a clarinet, you may have a point.

If you went to an all-boys school ... or are just pathetic ... that's valid, but in any normal circumstance, you'll be outnumbered about 3-to-1 by the womenfolk in a high-school age band.

You try carrying around an instrument in the blazing heat while going for a nice long walk for a couple hours ... while carrying a tune. 😛

It's not a sport, but it's hard work for sure.

But you'd still be hideously ugly and socially inept, so no pootang for joo.

i did marching band for about 4 years in HS. It is damn hard and physically/mentally draining.

It is a sport in the sense that you compete w/ other marching bands in competition, etc. But I wouldn't say it's a sport like baseball/basketball is a sport. Just the competition aspect and the training.

Some marching band aspects:

1) You need to memorize your music AND be able to play it perfectly

2) Memorize your placement on the field, and I'm not talking about just marching in a line. We did shows and had props and all this stuff, so you went all over the field. (if you do'nt know where to go, you'll look really stupid infront of lots of people)

3) Playing your music WHILE moving and keeping perfect posture is very hard. It's one thing to play your music while sitting in an air conditioned room, and it's another thing to march your steps/pattern w/o playing, but to do BOTH WELL, that is the challenging part.

4) The uniforms are hot as hell. Layer upon layer of thick clothing takes it toll on some.

It's not easy. but it is damn fun.

I believe you're looking for the overweight tuba player, not the studly young percussionist. 😛

its tough, i played football and band in 9th grade, marched in my uniform(i quit after 9th grade to play sports only) one guy i knew, he was so disciplined, he was in parade rest or whatever and a wasp stung him, it was a huge comp. they were at, he remained still until the show was over. thats discipline. it is alot harder than you think. playing/remembering song/marching is about as hard as singing and playing guitar at the same time.

its harder than you think and requires lots of discipline to be good.

Well it depends on how hard the drill is and how fast the music is while playing. Watch some DCI corps, i.e. Cavaliers, Cadets, Blue Devils and then come back and tell me what you think. Basically at times you're running while marching, doing an 8 - 12 minute show and also blowing air out to play so you really don't have time to catch your breath. I think a lot of people think it's easy until they try it. I was always in shape and ran track in high school so it didn't bother me too much but If I had to compare it to track when running distance, I would say I got just as exhausted doing marching band as when I got done running a track meet.

I played football, and to get in shape for it, I went to UW Madison's marching band camp in the summers. Marching band was every bit as difficult as football practice. Especially when you wear the full getup. Its insanely hot and the jackets are heavy.

I mean... I've never done it... but walking around for 3 or 4 hours while carring a (conservative..) 20lb object doesn't *seem* like that big of a deal. I wouldn't do it for fun... but they act like they've just completed a 12 hour marathon or something

Now walk around carrying that object at head-level while expelling air forcefully into it and moving your fingers to properly form a tune. Oh, and don't screw up or everyone will hear you. 😛

I can guarantee you that the UW Madison Marching Band is more of a sport than some of the other "sports" around. But that band is way more physical than most others I've seen.

but I doubt most high school marching bands are at that caliber....certainly not mine back when I did it...

I can vouch for the sex thing...when I was a youngin I was 1st chair trombone and gave this one HOT girl private lessons one day...then gave her some lessons of a different kind

I believe that college/professional marching bands are very strenuous.... but we're talking high school here...
