I post here in off-topic cuz this is what this forum is for right?
Recently someone started a thread in the hot deal forum (which was promptly locked) asking why coupon codes are banned there. It got me thinking about the ban which i havent really done in a while since i've learned to just accept it.
Ok, just to be clear, i've been a reader of anandtech articles for a long time, and i've been mostly a lurker in the forums. I was also around back during the whole coupon fiasco a couple years back when the ban first went into place. I understand that it was the threat of legal action that prompted the ban. However, there were and continue to be MANY sites and forums where you can go to get these codes.
One of these is f@twallet, which recieved an infusion of members back when the coupon ban went into effect. Now, they post codes willy nilly over there and dont seem to be hurting as they have been around at least as long as the coupon ban over here. Am I wrong in assuming that Anandtech has more money for potential legal battles than F@twallet does? Wouldn't it stand to reason that since they and many other sites can and do continue to post coupon codes that companies like Staples will not actually bring a case to court? Or if they have that they have lost? I freely admit that I don't know about any back room dealings and I rarely go over to check out f@twallet so if theres another explanation for their coupon freedom I don't know it.
I find it disturbing that the mere threat of legal action from these huge companies is enough to get them whatever they want in this and many other fields. I understand that they have relatively unlimited funding in comparison to most of the victims and I do not condemn victims for giving in, but it is a dirty tactic and if no one else is being bullied into banning coupon codes, why does Anandtech's hot deal forum continue to be?
And of course, the site's actual name is not f@twallet but is synonymous with "chubbybillfold" as I've seen other members refer to it. I can't even say the name of the site here in offtopic.
