I really don't know what to think here. I know the Disney deer was male, but does that necessarily make it more masculine? I don't know about you, but I'd hate to be named Bambi! I consider it the best "Pat" candidate of all non-ghettofied American names, completely androgynous.

Predominantly a feminine name. The Disney usage is the only time I've ever heard or seen it as male. But Disney was a little whacked.

I would consider Bambi to be a female name. Although I would also imagine it to be a fake stripper/porno name. I don't think I've ever seen anyone named Bambi before.

But was anyone ever named Bambi prior to that film?

The Disney character was definitely female.

I mean it was named Bambi. What else could it have been?

Bambi could not be more feminine despite the fact that the cartoon character was technically a male deer

Bambi is the female version of Rambo

Female = Bambi
Male = Rambo

Bambi is short for bambino, which is Italian for baby, a male baby.
Also, Bambi (in the Disney story) was proclaimed "Prince of the Forest". So while Disney's Bambi was definitely male, I still think of Bambi as a feminine name.

It could just as easily be short for "bambina", though.

Eh, true, but a Prince is a Prince.
