Background

In downtown Auburn, there's a corner with some oak trees estimated to be 130 years old or so. Auburn fans traditionally celebrate wins by rolling these trees with toilet paper. Pic here.

Recently one "Al from Dadeville" called in to a sports talk show and claimed to have poisoned them with an very potent herbicide, Spike 80DF.

Looks like he wasn't bluffing, the trees will probably die. Al is probably going to jail, assuming they catch him. They probably will, he didn't exactly cover his tracks by confessing on the phone. In a similar incident, someone was sentenced to 9 years in the pen for poisoning the Treaty Oak in Austin.

ESPN article.

link for pic does not work.

What is a Bama fan?

It is a shame about the trees. Such trees are rare nowadays.

Fixed the link, thanks.

Bama fan is a fan of the University of Alabama. Big rivalry, they hate Auburn, Auburn hates them.

It's winter time. The trees are dormant. This is good.

I would say a good bet would be to flush the whole area with a LOT of water, in hopes of leeching the herbicide away. Or maybe there is a chemical known that will destroy the herbicide? Doesn't seem hopeless....

Edit: Read the articles. Seems to be a very persistent herbicide, and the one article said it's "very lethal" at 0.78PPM. That sucks....

I've been there and seen the trees covered in toilet paper after the big game.

Damn shame some fucktard would do that.

What a moron.

You get to choose your punishment:

1) Jail
2) Wear a sign while standing on a corner near where the tree is located that reads "I poisoned the tree and Auburn sucks". The cops will not be in the area for at least one hour and all of the Auburn fans know this.

Go.

As an Alabama student and fan, I think this is a really shitty thing to do.

Fuck Auburn :)P), but don't take it out on the tree. :(

Quick update

Rumor is they've made an arrest or at least have someone in questioning.

Due to some heavy rains in the area, there's concern that that the herbicide might spread through the soil and affect vegetation for a few blocks around. Won't be cheap to fix that.

If the south wasn't such a terrible place that all they have is college football as the only positive thing to look forward to maybe this wouldn't have happened.

TPing trees to celebrate?
