Baltimore Vacation planning ... suggestions wanted

Hey fellas the wife has begun the planing for vacation this year and we are pretty much going to do the Baltimore Aquarium, Baltimore Zoo, Six Flags America and anything else that makes sense to do.

Kids are 4 & 7.

Its been about 10 years since we went and are looking forward to returning.

Looking for any suggestions as far as places to stay, eat, or go when we are there.

Thanks

Greg

When are you going?

Be sure to catch a Oriole game at Camden Yards, if you can.
Head over to Little Italy for dinner and stop by Vaccaro's for dessert.

Probably mid July. Its busy summer this year - wife's sisters wedding (june), BIG anniversary party for the wife's parents (july), my son's birthday party (july), cheering camp for my daughter (aug), and more so that's about the only free time.

An Orioles game would be great though. Let me check their schedule.

Thanks!

Just stay near the harbor, the rest of the city of trash.

Yeah I second the Maryland Science Center. The kids will love it. Lots of interactive things to do there. I haven't been there in 7+ years, but I hear they added a lot more things to it. The IMAX theater there is really amazing if you've never been to one. It's on the other side of the Harbor from the Aquarium. Like KrunchyKrome said, avoid the rest of the city, it really is trash the further you get from the harbor. I work in Little Italy (~3 blocks from the Harbor) and I can see the slums out the window!

For food, there's some decent places in Little Italy, but nothing that spectacular. McCormick and Schmick is a very nice seafood restaurant on the Harbor. Around the corner from the Aquarium on President's Street. There's also a Cheesecake Factory just outside the Aquarium. They took out the Fuddruckers across the street. Loved their burgers too.

How long is your vacation? You can probably do the Zoo one day (it's not downtown), the Aquarium and Science Center another (walking distance) and Six Flags another. Six Flags is about a 40 min to an hour drive from Baltimore as I recall. Haven't been in 10 years though. It was Adventure World last time I went!

As far as other things to do, you could always go out on a Harbor Ferry or something.

Six Flags in Landover is a joke, seriously. It's trashy as hell and just junk. You should drive the extra 100 miles and go to Kings Dominion in VA, it's 100x better than Six Flags.

I personally really dislike Baltimore and wouldn't take anyone there for a vacation 😛. I actually went to the Baltimore Aquarium about a year ago and it was no where near as cool as I had remembered it from when I was a kid. It was packed and the place is pretty small, much smaller than I had remembered.

Make sure you take a day and drive the 20 or so minutes to Annapolis. You need to go right down by the water, right next to the Naval Academy, its a great area, very historic with some great shops. Downtown Annapolis is my favorite part of Maryland.

I second the Annapolis idea. I also agree that Fort McHenry is a highlight in Baltimore. It is a very well preserved early 19th century fort. It was actively used until around WWI so it was maintained and has a variety of canons to look at. It is great for kids because there are lots of walls and barricades they can climb on. You can also threaten to lock them down in the magazine....haha.

Another cool place is the Walters Art Gallery. The kids would probably be bored, but it worth it just to see the extensive collection mof medieval armor and weaponry.

No need to go to PKD on vacation, we live 20 mins from there and have season passes so we go about 5-6 times a year.

I have never been to six flags and I do love roller coasters so thats why I want to go. I know GADV in NJ would be much better but that's just not possible right now.

Thanks for the input fellas I have added those places to the list.

I can't believe how much Baltimore has gotten run down, even the inner harbor. I was there about 15 years ago when Camden Yards was first built. Very touristy, clean, and most importantly, no bums! I went back this year on a business trip and took a day trip to the inner harbor. I must've been hit up by 10 to 15 bums while walking around there. Gypsy's at the Paris train station weren't this bad.

and now you know why I despise baltimore 🙂

I didn't think the inner harbor was that bad. I only make up to baltimore a couple times a year for the Orioles, Ravens, etc.. and hadn't found it to be terrible. I was there after the Ravens got lost in the playoffs and that was not a pretty site (fights everywhere) but besides that I still love Camden.
