Balls O Rock...

I remember thinking that climber who cut off his own forearm to escape from a boulder was Hard...

This guy has impressed me to a similar degree. Do you have any idea how daunting of an adversary a friggin polar bear is?! Keep in mind this is the only land animal on earth that hunts man... Being eaten by a bear ranks as one of the worst ways to go in my book.

I'm raising a beer to this guy tonight, I really am.

Dr. Eric Fortier, 34, used a pocket knife to attack a polar bear on Canada's Baffin Island, just south of the Arctic Circle, to save two friends who were being mauled.

:Q

You never know what you will be able to do during times of extreme duress but even then that's pretty hardcore! A brave dude for sure.

he's definitely brave. i dont know if i could ever do anything like that.
but i still think the guy that cut off his own arm is more of a hardass.
the polar bear guy had adrenaline working on his side, the climber probably didnt.
the rock climber had to make a conscious decesion to cut off his arm and endure the entire ordeal without passing out or going into shock. the polar guy sees his buddies getting attacked and just flies into action.

Yes, in times of extreme duress a majority of people break down and accept their deaths and cry their final moments away..

I'm not poo-pooing the climber guy by any means, that was an incredible feat of willpower, endurance, and fortitude by any scale. I guess what I mean is, this guy charged a hungry polar bear with a pocketknife - there isn't a hunter, fisherman, or hiker alive in North America that doesn't know what a bear can do to a human with ease. This guy went in knowing he could well be replacing his friends as the main course. I'd take freezing to death or bleeding to death ANYDAY over being mauled to death by a bear. A polar bear no less. I can't stress how much respect I have for them. My own dad was attacked by a medium-sized black bear in the summer of 1990 and it messed him up good. If it had been a polar bear, there is no question in my mind that he wouldn't have come home.

I'm dying to know what kind of pocketknife he had on him. Are we talking a good Cold Steel or Benchmade, or are we talkin an Old Timer trapper? 😉

With all respect to the Rock climber, he did what he did to save his own life. This guy jumped in to save others. Kudos to him. Hardcore.

camping where polar bears live seems dumb

nice that the guy had the guts to try and help his friends though

Sh!t, just going to Baffin Island at all seems dumb to me. I am amazed that anyone would venture into 'bear country' without a 12" gauge w/ slugs. Didn't they see that one pic of the guy who got his leg all chewed down to the bone and his junk was hanging out?? Yuck.

Yup. He's got a pair alright. There outta be like an amazon village we could send this guy to for breeding and rewards.
