Ballpark on paint job?

What does a decent paint job go for nowadays?
Assuming just prep and paint, no body work.

That would be a decent paint job. There's no upper end to how much you can pay for decent work. Chances are that if you're into a triple digit price, the work won't be decent.

QFT 1500-3000 can get a very good job here. Usually this is not going to include door / lid jambs.

There is a fantastic finishes nearby that does finally assembly for I think McLaren. They have an insane labor rate, but their paint bays are full of Aston Martins, Turbo Porsches, Bentley's, etc. It's in Royal Palm Beach. Cool thing is every day they will take a picture of your car and post the progress.

Just like everything, you get what you pay for. I will not argue that you can't get a paint job for $1500 to $3000, but it will be with low end products that will lack long-term durability and it most likely will not include much (if any) bodywork. It really depends what your plans are for the vehicle. Do you plan to keep it for some time, or is it something you will twist off in the near future.

Quality paint is expensive. I have almost $2500 invested in refinishing products for my 67 Fastback project. This includes all materials needed to strip, prep, prime, and paint the car with BC/CC and to repaint the engine/engine compartment and interior. For the topcoat alone the actual paint, catalyst, and reducer costs (PPG products) are probably around $1800.

Yes, I saw that body work was not needed or wanted. I was just stating facts that the labor for body work and prep is not cheap. I know I don't get bulk/volume pricing, but quality is expensive. Price out HOK or PPG products some time, it adds up. So alchemyst, how many cars have you painted?
